In some ways yes (said as an ABY owner). I wanted an ABY as I wanted the 6 speed box, the later engine, no distributer, overboost etc. I also believe that the ABY is easier to turn in to an RS2 specced car.

I would suggest that the ABY, being the last incarnation, could be said to be slightly better because Audi have continued to refine and improve the design, just like many people want the RR engive UR.

On the other hand, there are folks that want the 3B instead. From what I can gather, the main reasons seem to be weight (3B is lighter), lighter flywheel etc. The other reason for the 3B being less valuable is simply that it is an older car and therefore an average probably with a higher mileage.

Whilst you will see a lot of infighting on here (3B vs ABY and Coupe vs Hearse) they are all Audi Quattros and they are all great!

well said mate. i suppose at the end of the day each car is only as good as it has been maintained. Mine only has a bit under 103,000 miles on it but even after repair it will always be an accident repaired car. Just losing heart now and would hate to be out of pocket too. Maybe a wise man would break it and buy an ABY

Ah.. but just think what it'll be worth to you once it's sorted. The grin factor is priceless IMHO when it leaves Cupras, Type r's, GTI's ad infinitum for dust. A common phrase I do believe in Fife, and Glasgow is "WTF wis that?! .. I thought they were only about 150bhp"

Yes there were indeed a few gremlins and some “fixes” to put right (aux rad springs to mind, ICE wires earthed to the rear seat catches another!) and lots to improve and upgrade - a good bit of Tlc needed it has to be said!

I was aiming for an ABY because of the 6-speed, the lower miles (ideally) and the newer car, but that 3b seems oh so tempting.

I have several crazy plans formulating in my head, the craziest being buy an s2 in a more common form e.g. green with a couple of mods, give it 9 months, strip everything, re-spray, complete engine rebuild (new rods etc etc) and replace following as necessary: inlet manifold, exhaust manifold, clutch, gear box, F/RARB, exhaust, intercooler, hoses, front 996 anchors, rear s8 anchors, suspension. Ready to take a bigger turbo and a remap from mineha when i have sold my other kidney. (I recon the above would cost ~£12-14k with local mechanic friend, whos about as crazy as i sound )

Any other ideas?

Bloody 'ell that is my old cq20v!! What are the chances of that !!! The guy I sold it too was goin on about some bi-turbo conversion, I asked him some pertanent questions, courtesy of Jas, as to just how he was going to manage that and I never heard anything since! Dunno if he has transplanted an S2 lump in there as an alternative to the turbo conversion as its a lot of money for a cq20v!!

You're right D. I need to take big breaths and remember what it's like with my foot down in third.
Funnily enough a couple of nights ago dubbedup left a couple of neds (chavs) sitting in a pug 206 2.0 16v and they asked him at the next lights "wtf is in that?" to which he replied "diesel mate" just for the look on their faces (he debadged his avant).

Ahh, didn't spot it was only a CQ as I only glanced at it. Just took a closer look and it has an S2 bumper, S2 badges, S2 steering wheel, S2 tail pipes.

However, on closer inspection...

- The front is sitting up
- The clocks are black not white
- 1990? They only sold 23 in 1990, so unlikely
- The first picture shows yellow indicators, the remaining show clear

So as it is being sold as an S2, someone is gonna get conned

a cq20v... not an s2 ... almost had me! (The lesser trained eye)

Ill just sit back and wait until the right s2 ABY comes up for sale, hopefully in time for the ring trip!
