Well the side of mine has melted this summer. Doh!

Anyone have one? Or can they be repaired?

    Thanks

It happened when I was on my road trip in europe. Not really hot weather but it seems that several hours clutching the steering wheel melted the leather......doh! I have got 'kin great plates for hands...... doh!

        Hi Dan,

I know exactly what you mean! Happened to my wheel precisely at 3 o'clock and a little at 12 o'Clock. Really annoying isn't it? I think the leather wheel is 'coated' with something after manufacture which gives it a super smooth, slightly gloss look/feel.

I found after just a few track sessions, getting sweaty palms, grabbin' the wheel a bit that the coating began to 'pit' first of all. Then the coating lifted more and the exposed area grew and is now some 3 inches long around the wheel at 3 and 1" at 12.

Having said that, now that the coating has lifted there doesn't seem to be wearing any more in those areas. The resulting finish is a now smooth again, but matt and is the bare leather. Around the edges of where the coating has lifted the wheel feels rough, which is not great and of course the 'bare' patches do not match the rest of wheel....

I've asked around with some detailers and even Audi in Hatfield and noone seems to have any idea of what this coating is and if is can either all be removed or re-applied.

        Anyone, else any bright ideas?

        Cheers

Dunno Al, my car is an early RS2 and came with the four spoke airbag wheel from the factory. The later ones (indeed most RS2's) all seem to come with the 'fat' three spoke airbag wheel.

            Cheers,

I've heard of some people having this "repainted" so to speak as the same treatment can be done to leather when its faded.

Try AR Pound in baldock herts as I used to use them for stuff they do roll's royces etc and should be able to sort something out. My mate had his leather seats repainted and they came out looking new and it was cheap, for half leather seats with a bolster being done at the same time was £40 so for the steering wheel would be cheaper.

I see so not really 'melted' just sweaty hand syndrome. Did the same with S2 to Switzerland.

Make sure you use driving gloves in future

Part cured mine with gliptone leather stuff but you can never get the coating back to OEM
