this happenend me last year, passengers door and craweling over the handbrake for a week or two. used the old barrel of a 80 and and swaped the keeps over.
getting the barrel/handle off and linkages is the hardest part
I my case the the return spring for the catch failed. It broke in such a way that I was able to clip the remaining part of the spring under another piece of the mech.
If you remove the rubber cover from the back you should see what I mean.
Not a permanent fix but was good enough until I sourced a replacement.
i think thats whats happened to mine Mark - won't actually latch closed and the inner pull handle isn't moving the lock mechanism...
I want to replace the whole thing rather than start messing with the knackered one ideally so if anyone has a working one pls PM me.

Im having similar issues with my passenger door now and it doesnt quite lock unless you hold the door closed for a few seconds so think it will need a new catch also.
I should be able to send you one each from my door collection. It's the door latch plate that sits on the inside edge of the door yes? Happened on my old 80 many moons ago. PM me your addresses again lads if you need them.

I had my driver side go a few months back. Was £30ih from the local dealer which i didnt think was too bad as I was in a rush to get it. In my case it was a tiny spring that had broken and was impossible to get into.
Same happened to me in November 2007 in Upington South Africa near the Namibian border.
I ended up taping the door closed (passenger side) with wide box tape, as the outside temperature was +38 celsius at the time, - which was not as hot as the upset with Audi wife in the car!
VAG, Merc & BMW test their vehicles there for heat endurance....
With some luck I managed to modify some of the springs to make it work until I finally replaced it recently.
Mine went on my Avant, it proved impossible to find one in a scrappers, as usual most of them were taken as it's very common with the 80's - ended up getting a rear off side one and modded the latch with the end from my original to make it fit. It works fine and has been on for several months without any problems, just thought I'd put that suggestion forward should anyone else out there find themselves in that position...
