Wanted - 1.9TDi (AFN) Engine Parts

    Hi everyone,

My father in law has a '99 A4 1.9TDi (engine code AFN). Unfortunately a belt has snapped (not sure which as I haven't seen it first hand) and jammed the cambelt causing it to slip and.... well you get the idea.

The engine shut down immediately and the car was taken to a local garage where it is now. They haven't taken the head off yet but initial observations aren't good and so we are planning for the worst.

Just wondering if anyone has or knows anyone who has a cylinder head, camshaft etc. from this engine (or engine complete).

The car in question has been fantastic and owned since new and so it would be tragic to see this be the end of it.

Any help, direction or assistance would be very much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Dan

This has happened to my brothers car TWICE now, the accessories/serpentine belt snaps and takes out the cambelt. The first time it bent a valve which meant a top end rebuild, the second time he managed to kill the engine before it took out the cambelt.
Same engine, 1.9TDi AFN in an A4.

It's pretty terrible how a £10 belt can snap and take out one of the most delicate parts of an engine and cause so much damage.

eBay has shown me that reconditioned heads including cams and valves can be found for just over £200 which is good. I just really hope that the damage has stopped at the head and that nothing has dropped into the cylinders.

S if anyone owns an A4 with a 1.9TDi engine (like we do) then check your belts!

        AFN belt

Our R reg A4 dag dag shreds its belt from time to time too and in the 6 or so years we've had it it has had 2 aux belt tensioners and 3 belts. Theres usually some warning with it though as the bits stick out from the belt and theres an increase in the rubbery dust under the bonnet. At first I thought that it was down to either the alternator having an extra groove in the pulley (this was on when we got it and I have never got round to finding the right one), or a front impact before we got it having bent something (although there's no evidence to suggest this) but as time has gone on I've heard of more and more AFN cars doing it. I did notice at work that some of the AFN engined Alhambra's also suffered from the annoying squeal and general wobbly clatteryness when at low revs or idle and there was rarely anything could be done to correct it but I don't remember them actually shredding the belt that often. People often comment on ours sounding like its about pack up but its been like it for ages and if it packed up now it really would owe us nothing.

        Edit:
Sorry just realised how this post is of no use what so ever to your father-in-laws predicament. If I hear of any parts I'll let you know.

Ok, so the head was off today and although that is scrap it seems the damage has remained up top which is very good news.
I have seen a few re-conditioned heads on eBay but can anyone recommend a reputable engine reconditioner (doesn't matter where as long as it's UK based) that could possibly help me out with a new or reconditioned head?

          Many thanks
