im after a after run pump for my aby s2 avant, as at the moment it has been removed/bypassed as it was leaking. Would this do any damage to the engine or turbo?
As I understand it we dont get enough hot weather in the UK for the after run pump to be needed / essential. If I were you I would just bypass it and not worry about replacing it.
I think I read somewhere on the forum that if you have really been thrashing the car, and it has got really hot, it can be worth letting it stand on idle for a couple of minutes before switching the engine off.
Speak to Pete at Quattro Corner, he supplied me one last year after my ARP blew up in my face. I'd suggest that you replace it, they're about £80 and provide good protection to the engine on hot days and after a thrash or track session.

Agreed with Rusty - it provides good protection - even after sitting in traffic you'll find that water temps rise sufficiently that the afterrun pump is activated after you shutdown.
For info, the GSF version for the VW T4 van one fits as well, just needs bit of shaving with a stanley knife.(2 min job) I had mine go the first day of S2 ownership but managed to get it replaced straight away.

In 8 years all my pump ever did was leak, it never came on. It's been removed and bypassed for 2 years now. If it goes on after normal use or not all depends on exactly what temperature the switch on the inlet manifold actually works at. It's marked as 105 degrees C but obviously there's a tolerance on that.
As long as you let the car idle on the odd occassion you've been working it hard just before switch off, I believe you can live without the pump.
the water temps rise as soon as you switch off the engine, hence why the rad fans often comes on when hot weather / after a spirited drive.
The afterrun pump stops oil burning and coking up your turbo bearings as little old tubby gets no effect off the rad fan without the afterrun pump - IMHO this is why turbos on these kind of cars seen at least 150k+ miles and still going strong whereas ricers don't last half that. i'd keep it
