    Alternator wanted - ASAP please.

Tried to start my S2 yesterday after being sat for a while and found the battery to be flat.
Charged it for a bit and got it started but the battery warning light came on.
    The alternator is not charging.

I'm after either a 90A or a 120A one preferably in the Leicestershire area that I can pick up one morning this week.

      0120 465 007 bosch 120A, replaced this old one
      0120 469 822 (888) Bosch
      034 903 016 D VAG 90A

I had to do some adjusting work (simming the belt wheel offset for old wheel. It is recommended to renew the old wheel) because old alternator was not with multigroove belt.

      Bosh number 0120 465 007 & google:

New one is much slimmer and easir to fit to original tight installation position in 200.

Check the brushes/voltage regulator before you bin the alternator Matt. They're pretty cheap to replace.

            Will do Stu.
Brushes look ok but how do I check the reg?
In fact, is there a write up somewhere on alternators and refurb'ing them?

Just rebuilt mine, this was a help:
Find information, resources and relevant links for v12uberalles.com. This domain may be for sale.

Note that if you decide to change the bearings, the front one is likely an oddball size and is difficult to find. The link mentioned in the attached article worked for me as a source.
The alternator does not need to be disassembled to change the voltage regulator; it can be accessed by removing the black plastic cover at the back of the alternator.
Replacement VRs should be available at the usual part sources. (~$50 or so).

              Other helpful links:
My alternator died..Car was driving fine. No drivability problem. then I felt the symptoms... Symptoms: 1. Battery red dash light kept turning on/off intermittently 2. DSC/DTC/Brake light turn on intermittenlty 3. Battery red light stayed on, then all lights dim including headlights... 4. Car...

I have 4 (yes 4 that I've destroyed) Suzuki Alternators in the shed that just need brush packs. I think they can generally be had fairly cheaply too. If you are putting a second hand onon check the brushes before you do it as I've put on a used alternator to have it die 3 weeks later because of worn out brushes before now.

Ok, a little update on this.

A massive 'thank you' must go to s2_bo. I received an alternator from him at 7.30 this morning. That is some great service bud.
When bench tested my old alternator would make about 10v using a battery drill and a 12v supply to excite the field.
The new alternator makes 14v at about half the speed.
Does this mean the voltage regulator has failed?

New alternator is fitted and the car is back up and running.

Once again, many thanks to Bo and this forum.

                    Matt.
