WANTED: 4x4 drive car for my bro ASAP

My brother's insurance is coming up for renewal in july. He's told me that he wants to replace his 4x4 Vitara with a 4x4 car.. We need 4wd because we live down a very steep hill that 2wd cars can't climb when it rains.

He's tired of the 'no frills' motoring that the Vitara has to offer & says if he can't find a decent car to replace the Shitsuki with before his insurance needs doing again, he prob wont bother selling it.

10 years ago he used to own a type 85 GT 2.2, but was a pain leaving it up the hill, so ideally I'm hoping to get him back in to 4 ring ownership, but this time with quattro on board. And maybe a little more power :mischeif:

    So... what you got?

4motion VW's are generally cheaper than Audi's ( if you desperate ) with the same running gear.

depends how much he wants to spend but for a £, fun and age balance. A B6 A4 quattro is hard to beat. a 1.8TQ or diesel Q maybe? I love my 3.0Q but would prefer something with a turbo for remapping fun.

How about a coupe quattro 2.8e, you'll pick one up for small money, great value, easy to insure.

Sorry to hijack, but the CQ in your avatar wouldn't happen to be E***CRX would it? If so that used to be mine!

Not the one in the Avatar, no. Thats my bro's old GT. (we still have it)

Actually we have three, 2 CQ's & the 1 GT. There all in LAGO blue, & one of them is indeed E***CRX .

              How did you know that?

Sold it to Matt_C on Quattro-forum and followed its progress for a while, your user name sounded familiar and so I took a guess! Glad to see its still around!

My bros budget is around 3K.

On the A4 1.8T quattro. Is it proper quattro? or Haldex ghay FWD quattro?

And whats the ROAD TAX on a 2001 1.8T A4 quattro ? It's based on emissions from 2001 onwards isn't it? And will it being 4wd make it even more expensive to tax?

& When you say 'B6' do you mean 2001 model year onwards?

If it's this shape, I must say its the first 'standard' A4 shape that I acctually like the look of. The previous version looked too soft and blended in to the scenery too easily for my liking.. Except of coarse for the S4 versions that is.

I can strongly recommend an a4 tdi quat i have a 2003 model 1.9tdi q sport 130bhp and its absolutely superb problem is you might struggle to find one within your budget but the previous shape a4 is very good my brother has one and they just keep going and going!! 285k on his clock

yes the B6 is is late 01 to 04. It's possible to pick one up close to the 3k mark. the tax banding is based on the engine size/actual emissions stats for that car so quattro shouldn't affect the tax banding. a 1.8T wouldn't be high at all. The engine is common across loads of VAG cars and there's a wealth of info on giving them more welly.
I agree on the shape comments by the way. I didn't like the B5 variant (the B4 being the audi 80) but the B6 really tickles me. quite clean lines and a relatively agressive look for a family saloon with a few tweaks. decent alloys, lowered a bit etc all helps. I'm not even sure on the later versions but I'd still like one just because it's newer.
By A4 is a quattro sport straight from the factory but I don't see many etates that I honestly like the look of. s-line front valance and door mouldings definitely help (mine are on the way since I split the standard valance). It's proper permanent 4wd by the way, not the daft 'only when needed' like my old man's rav4.

what about this if it's been well serviced?

or this beastie? I got mine cheap because the EML was coming on. Scan indicated the cats were allegedly knackered so I got a great price, reset the code, ran some injector cleaner through it, gave a good thrashing (it had been a school run car) and only feed it 98 or 99 octane juice now. It's come back on twice in about 18 months, which says the cats are starting to show age but not bad enough yet to cause problems or fail an MOT. I Def won't be buying cats from the dealer when it comes to it but used dealer prices to haggle and get a lot of money off the price. Maybe worth taking someone with vagcom with you to look at it and see what the fault code is?

Or how about a car previously owned by a man with sandpaper fingers here?

Or the torquey 3.0Q like mine? non the most sensible fuel consumption but very powerful and 216bhp standard here?

And then you get the lunatic selling a car with 260k miles and expecting too much here

The 2.8 coupe quattro is also a brilliant car.
                          erm.. i'll stop now.

cheaper alternative could also be a slightly older A6 quattro. example here or here or here
..actually there are quite a few on autotrader

or full on silly 4.2 V8 A8 mental "i don't give a toss about the tax" fun here

Thanks for every ones help so far.

How powerful is the 1.8T ?

Ive seen 150bhp quoted and 180bhp quoted. So witch is it?

And I've also seen people running 270-300bhp out of these engines . Is that just with a remap?
