Cheers for the advice Pete, I'll probably just buy new. Had a good result on the Golf last night so now have some spare funds!

I can vouch for that! Managed to get the old one off after much swearing over the weekend!

Quattro Corner don't do them unfortunately.

So does anyone have one of a car that's been broken?

          S2avant - Ben @ TPS . PM him.

They were £125 from VAG Parts in 2004 so not suprised they've gone up.

If someone has a spare then I can sort out a strengthening brace for that confounded joint - will be a lot, lot less than £193!

I could send you my broken one to have a look at and I'd be very interested in a stronger rod.

I've got a 3B one which is very similar so can compare the two.

They have changed the design of the circlip that holds the rod in place on the 3B one to two parts that screw in the top. And the rod is a bit thicker but not much.

The trouble is that the threads on my old one are completely knackared due to the way that the rod has bent into the gap.

And stupidly (in hindsight) I took the second hand 3B one I got apart so that I could see how I might just swap the rods over. And now I can't get it back together!!

So now I've got two useless master cylinders and a car that's off the road!

from experience its best to bite said bullet and get a new one from VAG or vag supplied.

done bother with ECP. its the wrong part.

Best start with an ABY one, then fit will be spot on.

I sold my old M/C to someone who was going to fix it themselves. D'oh.

One worry I have though is that I've been told (by I think Dan at The Auto Pool) that the rod can snap because the clutch is knackared and they have seen cases where a new master cylinder push rod will snap after very little use. So I don't really want to splash out on a new one and have that break in a couple of months.

Although I do think mine has bent and broken gradually as some of the marks and wear look very old as if it has been bending and rubbing for quite a while. So hopefully the clutch is ok?!

Sounds feasible. Mine had a new clutch AND master cylinder at Autopool. If the fingers break on the clutch I can see its possible to start damaging the master cylinder push rod as a result...

Does anyone know of a way to get and idea of the state of the clutch to see if any fingers are broken without taking it apart?

The clutch was always consistently medium ie not too heavy or light and it didn't get heavy before the push rod snapped or anything like that so I'm tempted to just replace the master cylinder.
