It does make the job so much easier, 10 minutes max per side once you marked the top mount so it doesn't mess up the alignment, a great piece of audi thinking

Makes it very easy to get the cap off.

What is the procedure for changing shocks with one of these?
and can the rear shocks and top mounts on the S2 Coupe be changed without removing the struts?

              Edit:
Its just one of these for the nut at the top of the strut right? .. an offset ring spanner can also be used to reach the nut - on the front of an S2 anyway.

This tool is used to open the strut cap that holds the shock into the strut. The pipe drops down over the piston of the shock and the hex shape engages that unusual strut cap.

Ok I see .... so this is the big 'nut' that holds down the large diameter portion of the insert to the strut housing.
Can this all be done though the top-mount hole and the shock pulled out through there as well?
Are spring compressors still needed to remove the top mount?
And can the same be done on the S2 coupe rear?

That's the one, I have a pic somewhere in photobucket but can't find it. I always assumed the struts had to be removed on the s2. If it can be done it'd be great for someone using adjustable shocks.

I think this only applies to the typ 44 chassis not S2 or typ 85/89, b3/b4 platforms

i know there is a 28mm version (Matra 40-201B) that is meant for 80s and s2 etc but i cant see how it would be as straight forward as on a t44/c4

They should be able to help you out. Failing that, you can order one through your local dealer (not TPS).
