Morning all Looking to buy wiper switch for A6 Avant with on-board computer control Think switch from coupe and 80/RS2/A4/A6 Avants from around 92-97 should work Cheers Andy
There were steering shaft diameter changes between the 100s and A6s so I doubt that any 80/90 switches would work, certainly 100 switches won't. You need to be more specific about the year of your A6 and search on that basis.
(I have a 93 S4 and a 98 C4 A6 avant and I am pretty sure the switches are not interchangeable).

Looking in ETKA, I'm thinking p/n 8D9 953 503A is the correct part for the rear wash/wipe switch which covers the models above but we all know it's never that simple.
Unfortunately I can't get the old switch off yet to check for the correct part number.
Mine is a '95 A6 Avant

Andy

I checked with my friend Kate and she says that you are (mostly) correct that there is a big cross-over to many other Audis with that PN above. I also asked about the turn signal/headlight cross-over and while there was a big cross-over (including Audi 80s, A4s, etc. NOT the C4 100/S4s (which I knew about)). So we are both right.
I have two A6 DOT (USA/Canada) left and right switch assemblies in my hands right now. Neither of the wiper sides have the trip computer (not a North American option). One is for a sedan and one is for an avant. They are different (obviously, the avant switch can be pushed forward). I can not get the PN off the tags (both totally faded). The problem with your PN above is Kate is silent about avant vs sedan. But I know there is likely a difference.
I also have a sedan trip computer switch in my hand with a 4A0953503A PN on it. To make me crazy, Kate says was superceded to a 4A953503A on Jan 1, 1992. PN 4A9953503A crosses to a bunch of older C4 and B3/B4 Audis so go figure.
Bottomline: I tried to help but have failed. You are on the right track but it would be helpful to post up the PN from your switch so the exact cross-over can be determined.
The only thing I might be able to provide real help with is I believe it is possible to swap the stalk from a non-avant trip computer switch to an avant switch. (I think)

Should hopefully get in the workshop tomorrow and have it all adrift
I have 3 or so switches from various coupes/avants which I can try but neither of these have the board computer.
I also have a faulty switch on the CQ which needs attending to!
Will update hopefully with p/n if it can be read

Have a look at this: You might be able to build what you need from parts that you have:

Managed to get this sorted last night
Had the switch off and tweaked the contacts a little, a good clean up and re-grease and all is well. One working rear wiper.
The part number is 8D9 953 503A as thought and can confirm the steering column shaft is wider on the A6 than the Coupe, why they cross reference them across the models I do not know.
The coupe switch would also appear to be wired differently, although the connector will phisically fit to the switch, the windsreen wipers come on permanently and the rear wiper was on/off in a strange fashion
Another to cross off the list
Thanks for the info
Andy
