good info but this engine is in a ur quattro so there isn't enough access as the front slam panel overlaps the crank pulley.

If in a UR you could use a pry bar onto the starter ring through the starter motor hole. Not ideal but if no room out front it is the easiest way.you'll need to work out the optimum angle and get a strong mate to hold it.

I personally made up a universal adapter for most vag engines using a plate that bolts onto the Flywheel side of the crank and locks up on the engine stands. Although no good on the car.

                          I wonder ...

I was idly looking at the front of an AAN last week and started to wonder if the 3256 was created simply because the older style alternator bracket isn't there any more.

Would it be possible to use a 2084 if you temporarily fitted the older alternator bracket just to hold the end of it?

Not if you have aircon, you need to extend the lugs on the 2084 as the crank pulley is deeper because of the extra belt drive of the pulley.

There's a BTDT on the forum by s2central.net on how to modify the 2084.
