Right, back in the position I was almost a year ago looking for an Avant, gave up back then and bought something else but that's gone so options are a B6 1.8t quattro or an S2, power aside how different are the 2 cars to drive/live with ?.

How much money do you have ?
Can you work a spanner ?
Is it to be a daily ?
The answers to these questions will help in determining which of the two cars is more suitable for your circumstances.
What about an urS6 Avant, (or saloon - big boot), much cheaper than an S2 and very under rated imho.
Kind regards.Last edited by macspring; 26 November 2011, 01:37. -
Thanks for the reply, money ?, considered an RS2 but already have a 20 year old performance car in my garage, spanners ?, I can but one old car is enough to keep me busy, daily ?, yes but only around 5k a year, all this points towards a B6 quattro but finding a decent early one isn't happening and late ones are nearly RS2 money that's why I wonder how different they are.Comment

To say it is the ugliest might be overstating the case.
This thread is so the A4 (B6) forum members can post pictures of their cars to share with everyone. It will make a good resource for people to get ideas of how to mod or style their A4 (B6). 1. ONLY post pictures of A4 (B6)'s. 2. If not your A4 (B6), state otherwise. 3. No commenting on...
What's the existing car in the garage ?
An RS2 would be a solid investment, if you ever decide to sell it in the future.
I'd say an S2 / RS2 will definitely cost you more in the medium / long run, but would also be the more satisfying.
All depends on how much money you want / have to "waste" on a car.Comment

Ha, exactly the same position as me. Sold a really good B5 1.8tq sport in Feb and bought a B6 S4 avant and took it with me to NZ for 7 months (very strong kiwi dollar made it 7 months of free motoring!). Figured that when I got back to England I'd probably get a B6 1.8tq but prices are really high even for high milers, feels like demand for quattros is high because of recent winters. Also they're over £400 a year in road tax! So that's left me looking at S2 avants and there's a couple of lovely ones out there but feeling myself drawn more to a B5 S4 as I worry about the amount of maintenance it would need and the onset of rust. Are they still viable daily drivers?Comment

Rust is normally only an issue on the leading edge of the two front wings. One really needs to take out the front wing liners out and clean out this particular area and then also other areas exposed by the removal of the wing liners. But most previous owners of the car won't have done this and the possibility of it being done only really arises when a car is bought by an interested owner as found on here.
Avants can sometimes have a little rust at the base of the rear tailgate windscreen. Not sure of the cause ?
A B5 S4 might be less hassle, B4s suit the majority if ocd owners on here.
A decision made to buy a particular model of car will be unique to that individual given the huge variety of that purchaser's experiences and circumstances.
We can only advise, but the final choice rests with yourselves.
No more help that any of my other posts, but hey it's nice to chat, when not fantasy shppping on Pistonheads or E-bay.

Low miles 91 turbo is my sunny day car, Love the look of B5 RS4's but potential maintenance costs put me off, talk on here suggests S or RS2's can be moneypits too, are B6 turbo quattro's really £400 road tax ?, if so they're out, pisses me off paying £200.

My lady bought a B6 S4 Avant in April, really great car I love it. Never going to be the best on fuel of course, but like you she does about 5k miles a year so not an issue averaging 21-22mpg. They are cheap as chips for this reason - a lot of car for the money. The £400 tax came in during early 2006 IIRC, so only the last of the B6 cars will apply.Panthero Coupé quattro 20vt

Pauly,
They are different when they are both standard, but it can be very hard to keep an S2 standard, especially if you surf here for any length of time.
Can't really advise on the later car but it depends on what you want. No trouble pick the later one, but for good fun but plenty of grief and expense pick an S2.
Having said that loads of people buy an S2 but they don't suit everyone. They suit someone who likes to fix and improve stuff.
But if you just want to hop into a car and drive it, pick the later car.
Just my tuppence.
Nice Porsche btw. Having an S2 with the Porsche could prove quite expensive.
Only two things I'd say is that if buying an S2, one buy the best one you can afford and second buy an Avant which will have an ABY engine.
Hopefully others can shed some additional light in relation to your query.
Kind regards.Comment
