I need a starter motor for my S2. I believe it's the starter that's gone, however I don't really want to buy a new one only to find it's not the starter that's causing the problem.
Has anyone got one that I could pickup (Bristol area) or one that could be delivered in the next day or two? It's the last thing preventing me from running the car
Just a note: Starters are one of the main victims of a faulty ignition switch. When the switch fails (the case breaks and the return spring no longer works), the key does not automatically return to RUN from START. As a result, the starter stays engaged with the ring gear on the flywheel and gets over spun by the engine, killing the starter.
As a result, I recommend changing your ignition switch BEFORE you install the new starter. Otherwise, you might end up with two dead starters. The common ignition switch PN is 4A0905849B. Here is a C4 replacement procedure you could adapt to the B3/B4:

I use them all the time and it costs a fraction of the cost of a new one for them to fully refurb it ! They charged me around £65 to completely refurb my alternator inc bearings compared to £150+ for a new one

Cheers for the suggestions. I'd buy a new one or get mine refurbed, but I just want to check it's the starter before throwing money at something that might not be the cause. I noticed the fat braided connector was crumbling away, so I've replaced that but it's just the same, one click and no spin.
