    Upgraded AAN coil kit

I'm looking to get an upgraded coil kit for my URQ with an AAN as i hear the standard AAN coils are a weak point on the electrics, oh and also my dog ate all the wiring whilst i had the coil cover off for painting

If you have painted your coil cover, you obviously like it and want it back on the car. This makes a modern VAG coil on plug conversion option less suitable because they don't like the heat build up under the cover and can fail prematurely. If you want to keep the coil cover then your best bet is a LS2 coil based or 034 Motorsport HO conversion which are 2 stage (bit like the original set-up but cheaper to replace) designs which site the electriconics away from the engine and heat. Check out 034 Motorsport or EFI express for options such as these http://www.efiexpress.com/catalog/pr...products_id=18. EFI express are very helpful and shipped my TFSi conversion very quickly (I ditched the coil cover). Apikol do sell a vented coil cover to supplement their TFSi coil conversion kit which would less of a problem but I wouldn't keep an OEM coil cover with them. Have fun :-)

Oh i only gave it a quick lick of paint, nothing fancy
Im not worried about replacing the cover for a better option.
        Thank you

I do not like spending money when the solution can be achieved at a third the price.

Bought 5 coils from a VW chico. Nice and compact and mounted on the stiffener between the shock struts.
Wired up the same as the original coils.
Bought a good set of coil wires (expensive set).
Removed some material from the under side of the coil cover so that the boggie leads could pass between the cover the head, where loom used to pass thru.

Never had a days problem with it on AAN with RS2 turbo and exhaust manifold.
          Regards

You can buy 5 x 1.8T coils from Germany "115R" for 115 € including shipping and then you just buy a harnes for them plug and play it will cost 189 €

So around 300 € and you will have a state of the art ignition system. and if some coil fail in the future it´s cheap to buy just a new coil... (~24€)

I Believe that someone here on the forum makes these conversion cable sets, otherwise www.nascom.se sells them, bought mine from there

Yes I have TFSi coil based set-up worked out about £300 all in but I ditched the coil cover under advice. If you keep it then you will get more frequent failures, which whilst they are not expensive to repair or hard to replace is still annoying particularly if you are in the middle of overtaking someone when it dies.... Some claim the TFSi coils are not suitable for above OEM boost so whether your AAN is remaining stock is a relevant part of the equation.

Thanks for all the tips mate.
My plan is basically to run on a fairly standard setup.
I don't mind running it without the coil cover, as i prefer reliability over style
I will definately be buying an off the shelf unit as i'm terrible with wiring and since my dog destroyed the wiring out the back of my coil cover, i have nothing to copy to make a homemade kit from.

If you don't mind losing the coil cover and won't be running more than OEM boost levels then a simple TFSi coil on plug conversion harness is the cheapest option. I went with the EFI express version which at current USD exchange rates is competitively priced compared even with the shipping. Marc at EFI is very helpful, shipped quickly and answered a few post installation questions I had very promptly. The quality of construction is also very good. There are at least 5 variations on this design available commercially from different suppliers so maybe spend some time googling it. I use mine with bosch copper tri-electrode plugs now but it ran perfectly with the OEM platinums also.

It sounds like the TFSI will do me at EFI so, as i need to start gathering bits for the conversion ASAP as theres a guy going to do the conversion for me in early feb.
