What year is your car? There are different regulators.

Ouch, very close to the chassis break, like mine is. What a pain it has been.

There is an early and a late regulator, I believe the change was in 1991.

If you've got the earlier regulator, buy a repair kit which is still available from the dealer for circa £70. You can spend months looking for a good used one. If you've got the later one then you shouldn't have too many problems gettting hold of one, they're even still available new.

If you've got you chassis number handy I can advise which you have, and part numbers

Hi Sidrick, thanks for the interest in my thread, I'm not sure what the difference is, I've been told the fixings are slightly different? Just to be clear the stranded wire which winds the window up/down has all but broken fouling up the works.I'm not sure what you mean when you say I'll need a regulator? I've not had to replace a window mechanism on the S2 before so not sure what's involved or what I need, I'm relying on others with experience of replacing a window to advise and sell me what is needed if you follow.
            Chassis WAUZZZ8BZMAO11280 Thanks Condor.

From vagcat.com, it looks to me like you have the later regulator, which is a good thing A call to your dealer would confirm, though.

The regulator is item 1 in the diagram and is a bloody big metal frame that bolts to the door. This items includes the cable and all pulleys and is available for circa £160 for a genuine item from eurocarparts using a discount code from their homepage. Part number 895837398C. They are also widely available second hand.

If the frame and pulleys are in good condition (the pulleys often get brittle and break) then you can get away with buying the cable on its own, termed as a regulator repair kit. 895837726B for the drivers side and I was about £70.

I replaced the cable on my earlier regulator (complete unit no longer available new) just a few months ago. It's not too difficult to do, but it chewed itself after about 3 months. I don't know if this was down to fitting (I can't see how you can go wrong though) or just bad luck.

              I hope that makes sense.

looks like an early one to me(although i cant see the picture that well as i am on my spare phone)if you take one of the top right nuts off where it mounts on the door you shuld be able to tell if the hole that goes through the mech is square or round, square is early, round is late
