I just replaced mine (98 C4 avant) yesterday (it didn't have a switch).

That is the simplest light/switch arrangement ever. Yours probably only needs a good clean and perhaps because there was a short due to the water, replacing the fuse (Probably No. 8 on the end-of-dash fuse panel).

I have heard of "acid rain" but that is ridiculous.

I think the aerial has had a slight leak for a long time, giving a chance for the steel contacts to go back to were it came from.

Steel? The ones on mine are copper (or at least copper coated). Can you post a photo of the issue?
