Help! Clutch gone, advice needed etc!

    Hi all,

Okay so after only owning a S2 Avant for only 2 weeks I pulled out of the garage and the clutch stuck in when changing to 3rd!!

Pulled over and checked the clutch wasn't stuck in the mat or something simple like that, but I am pretty sure the clutch has gone?
Now when pushing the clutch down it doesn't engage and you hear just clinking from below (gearbox area) it doesn't go into any gear.

I was told by the previous owner that it had a new clutch, but the very small number of times I put my foot down I thought I could smell possibly a slight clutch smell

There was a lot of receipts and history with the car but the only thing I could find in relation to the clutch was a receipt for a Clutch Master Cylinder 2008 and a Clutch Slave Cylinder 2008.

The car has been quickly looked at by a friend mechanic and he thinks that the clutch has gone, but then he even said "he is no Specialist, and hasn't worked on quattro's before!"....... The car is now due to go to a relative who I found out works for a VW/AUDI Garage so hopefully he will give me the exact diagnosis!

Im hoping that someone on here can give me some advice and guidance

IF the clutch has gone then roughly how much would a replacement S2 one cost, and also roughly how much labour cost do you think?.... I know every garage is different but even a rough cost to go on would be good, as I have no idea!!

Another thing, would it be a good idea to upgrade the clutch seeing as it has to be replaced anyway, In the near future I will be hoping to run between 400 - 500hp, this is a long term project for me really, hopefully including a full respray and a lot more

Apart from the above the engine and everything else seems sweet.

Take off the panel covering the pedalbox and check the clutch pedal linkage, also check that the slave cylinder on top of the gearbox hasn't shed its pin and fallen out.

Stock Audi clutch with flywheel reface and fitting will be about 500, add about 2-400 for a non standard clutch depending on what you get but then you might as well go single mass flywheel as well.

      Hope it's an easy fix

Where are you in bristol? PM me if you need a hand.

It's not hard to diagnose whether the clutch has gone, any decent mechanic should be able to check the master cylinder and pushrod first to rule those components out of the equation. It could be the pushrod that's gone and you just have to sort that. If the car is in Bristol I'll have a look at it. If you need the work doing I know a garage that will do it at a reasonable price. I'd do it with you but I'm flat out with work at the moment.

There is a problem a few of us have experienced of the pressure plate failing and it sounds if you could be the same.

Last time I bought one, a new pressure plate from the Dealer was less than £100 (helped by the fact it was exchange) so that + labour is your minimum cost.

An uprated clutch will cost you more and possibly/probably give you a heavier clutch pedal which is tiresome and leads to pushrod problems but may be necessary if you're going up into 500Hp teritory.

Thanks for the advice and offers to help everyone, much appreciated!

Well it's due to go into a VW/Audi Garage where a relative works so hopefully it will be a reasonable price!

I thought the clutch was relatively heavy anyway so considering it being a everyday driver I think I will keep it just under 400, that will be plenty quick enough anyway! The spare money can go on making it look lovely instead

                    My tuppence.

My new standard clutch fitted to my 2.0l 16v, (engine code: ace), Avant was incredibly light. So much so, that I initially thought it wasn't working, and was somehow broken even though it was brand new.

The Southbend uprated clutch in my S2 aby Avant is very light in operation, and certainly no heavier than a "medium to little" aged standard clutch.

All clutches seems to be much lighter when new, compared to the same clutch when it gets old.

If it was me, I'd leave the duel mass flywheel in place, once it is in good condition, and fit a standard clutch, or a LUK or a Sachs standard clutch, or a slightly uprated Sachs clutch, or Southbend clutch, as you never know when you will be taking the engine out. i.e. you don't want to be taking out apart again too soon / too frequently, especially when you are not in a position is to do it yourself, and have to pay to have it done.

                    Measure twice, and cut once.

Hopefully, it is a master or slave cylinder issue, rather than the clutch.

Post the results of what your relative finds.

                    Best wishes.

Haha well it's definately not Gert Slush

Okay so if I find out the clutch has 'worn out' then can someone tell me what they would do in my situation?? replace with a standard ABY clutch with 7k on costing around £100 plus labour costs, or pay a bit more and get a better clutch stage 1 or whatever (this I need some advice on, what one how much, where from etc)

If its only another £100 or so then I will go with a better clutch?.... SRE Organic

Well as I thought I need a new Clutch, and arm, have been quoted £240 for brand new Sachs Clutch with guarantee and £210 for Labour costs, does this sound right? Work is being carried out by a VW/Audi garage so hopefully all will go well
