Wanted 55mm front strut housings in good condition
Well I'm planning on cutting threads on the strut itself instead of using coilover sleeves, so I need a nice surface. I have perfect struts at home, but they are from the 50mm variety... so I know such struts exist, but the UK roads don't treat metal right... if I don't find struts in good condition then I will use sleeves, but I'm trying to avoid it.
Because it's lighter, because I will have the chance to run both 2.5 and 2.25 springs (with sleeves 2.25 springs will be too close to the sleeve), because it will probably be cheaper (I have access to M55 lock nuts that are perfect for coilovers with 55mm O.D.).
At the end I may resort to sleeves, but because it's not something urgent I wanted to try my chances
The 50mm struts are only 50mm on the top, just above the spring perch, afterwards they become 55mm like the others... so you have a difference in diameter which makes it even harder to have a nice long thread.
Also I prefer using bigger shock inserts than the ones used in the 50mm struts. I'm considering cutting 50mm struts and welding 55mm tubes on top of them...
