What kind of timeframes might we looking at for making the mould?
What kind of 'assurance' would he need before he starts work?
Who owns the moulds after the work is complete?

    Hi,

I suppose that he can make the mould and get a prepay of some sort before he starts producing.

I have made a mould in the past and he asked a small amount of money for the mould (materials and work) and made one piece for test/show. After everything was fine/acceptable he made more parts out of it. The prices where very reasonable back then.

He owns the mould after that. He states that "I dont charge much in the beginning till the customer is satisfied". After that he charges normal money and owns the mould.

I you need further info let me know and I can ask.

Yeah, I have a minor issue with suppiers charging for all the time and materials on moulds and then keeping them. If the client has paid for all the labour and materials, they have have the right to own the moulds. Especially if the design of the item is the property of the client.

But if your contact is willing to absorb the upfront costs and recoup them with a margin per unit sold then for a limited edition piece, that sounds pretty reasonable. Especially given the original design came from Audi.
