  • Aftermarket VS motronic management

Since there has been a recent debate taking over other usefull threads, i thought of starting one here.

Lets see what people think and where they would put their money on!

(this thread can end quite quickly as well! )

I have motronic for mine, I was thinking about vems but as jamo pointed out i'd end up getting fed up forever having to tweak it so tbh i'd prefer to just get it mapped and drive the thing.

ill take the initiative and say, aftermarket ECU in the way VEMS is structured gives the owner the opportunity for some to complete involvement in the management, allows for continuous variability of the tuning, is less error triggered by various sensors misbehaving but will allow for lots of functionality regarding wrong values on sensors and engine items. It will allow the use of a more elaborate inlet temperature sensor as well.

You can use any sensor you like on Motronic, because the curve is fully mappable.
But tuners who tune 6 maps of course will tell you that you can't.

And "less error triggered" you can turn all that off - it's mappable.
But then again, it's trying to save your engine.

Anyhow, from logs, my Motronic is accurate with IAT to one degree.

Depends on the owners mindset fit and forget or tinkerer, if the stock ecu could have done what I wanted I would have stuck with it but aftermarket has it's place only thing is the top notch ones cost a fortune

Aftermarket ECU is for people who enjoy driving with a laptop in their car.

The main thing is that Motronic is not easy tunable. Once we can tune Motronic on our own its ok.

I dindt use laptop for long time. I have wideband with EGO correction and it's fine. And my big *** turbo is bigger than the RS4 MAF.
                  Go Holset or Go RS4

That's what is putting me off getting a VEMS.

                      It is for me

Question is - does average user need to worry all the time about his car? About it not starting?
I can tune my ECU when I have the mood, adjust a few things, then I can drive for a month without attaching anything to it and it just works.

I don't have issues with idle, cold start, warmup enrichment etc, because Audi already did that for me. Better than I ever could.

Thats not what I said Acidburn I said you would have to learn how to correct any issues with the ecu on initial setup and you don't need to keep a laptop in the car that's a myth.

Depends if you spend the time you don't have to mess with VEMS it's perfectable stable and can be left alone, myself and A80avant have a) changed versions b) implemented the new features c) changed engine specs hence the changes

You could easily do a Bram get it mapped once on 1.1.27 and never have to touch it again

You wanna come over here for the winter and show me how your car starts in -25C?
My "crappy" motronic started in -32C with one turn of key.

Started perfectly find in -10c in England last winter, have you seen the new firmwares? cold starting is no longer an issue

Again perception, VEMS is constantly evolving hence you get what you want out of it

The early firmwares were a nightmare which is why I didn't want it but I bought it around 1.1.63 which although now ancient is streets ahead

current 1.1.88 is stable as a rock
