  • VEMS w 60-2

Hey folks I'm trying to get my engine started with a VEMS V3, and I'm looking for some help from those who may have a similar configuration.
I picked up the ECU and V3 harness with relays and all, with no pre-configuration from vems.hu.
This system is being retrofitted to my AAN, previously running a full 034efi IIc system; so I'm using the HO Coils, 60-2 trigger wheel, and Siemens Deka injectors.
    (GTX-3071R)

All of my wiring is installed
injectors click and coils spark when tested
Primary (VR) and secondary (CamHALL) Triggers are good
timing tests show a good TDC reference during cranking
    Batt voltage is ok
    fuel pressure is good

but something is mis-configured in my software. Never once does a spark ignite fuel while I'm cranking, I only smell the flooding after cranking a few times for 10 - 15 second intervals... I am relatively new to doing diagnostics on the VEMS software, and somewhat new to understanding what I'm doing when it comes to proper configuration. -I'm learning as I go, reading a lot of forums and published information etc. but the granular detail is beyond me at this point.

What I'm hoping is that someone with a VEMS system, using a 60-2 is around here and would send me a config file. I could look over it to answer some of my questions, and then come back with more informed Q's.
    - I think I've truly exhausted my own investigative options, and now I just need a little help to get me going again! If anyone can, I would be indebted!

Have you spoken to marc swansson at efiexpress?

He would be able to help you out. I'm sorry I haven't been using 60-2 and ppssinly couldn't help.

I can pm you my email anyway to have a look.

I've posted on quattroworld, and Marc replied with a few suggestions, but I was trying to avoid using his time too much before I have some reasonable questions.
It seems the majority of folks he works with are using the stock harness, coils and triggering off the flywheel.
I've gotten a few config files from those folks, but unfortunately they don't bear much resemblance to my setup.
I'll follow up again and see if he might be able to specifically identify someone with a 60-2.
-If you're willing to take look I think the issue would likely be easy to spot....

I was under the impression that the 60.2 would realt need a specific number for the spark angle to be calibrated and nothing else significant. Ill pm you to see if there is something else wrong.

The vems community forums is another place yoi could ask, although it seems fairly quiet lately

can i ask why the 034efi wasn't any good?

I have not set up VEMS with 60-2 before, but I had a similar issue with ViPeC.
And it turns out that the phase was 360 degrees out.
So the cam sensor zero point had to have 360 degrees added to it, and after that it fired right up.

No idea if this helps, but thought I'd throw this out here.

I don't have the VW trigger wheel, although I've read that thread and it looks like a nice option. I bought the 034 full kit with all the goodies a couple years ago, so that's where the 60-2 came from. - I still have it but my switching is about a number of things that appealed to me, with VEMS and frustrated me about 034.
034 software, horrible application UI. Perhaps the worst I've seen when it comes to usability. Kinda like someone tried to reinvent the wheel, and it didn't work out
I've also spent tons of money with those guys, and been frustrated every single time including attempts with customer service; I'm a nice patient guy, and I kept thinking the next time will go better. Never happened though unfortunately.
I bought the VEMS because I have a second project and thought I'd trade up and compare. The 034 is going into #2.
So far VEMS is much nicer when it comes to configuration and usability, I do have a long way to go though and I've been trying to get to simply fire up even once for what must be 6 months... :-\

I replied to your question over on quattroworld. Repost of the text here so it might help others:

Vemstune makes the process pretty easy. just go under base setup->primary trigger settings.

at the bottom of the page where it has a drop-down that says "defaults", select 5cyl_60-2. it will set a bunch of things on that page. burn the settings.

Now go to your ignition outputs visual page and make sure all of that stuff makes sense.

Next up is the really important part, which is zero-setting your ignition timing. where your flat teeth are can vary from setup to setup, so to dial it in go to tools->ignition lock and set it to some small value, I usually use 1 degree (you'll need a dial advance light set at 1 to make it line up). alternately you can edit your timing map so it cranks over at 0 degrees. entering "0" into the ignition lock disables the feature. Grumble.

so with timing locked at zero, go to the base setup->primary trigger settings visual page. flash your #1 wire against a known TDC cyl #1 reference mark (flywheel, balancer, whatever). if its off, adjust your "TDC After the trigger" setting until it does line up. If you have to move your value under 60, or you run out of adjustment on the top end of the field, you'll need to shuffle your ignition output order so that it can be within that range.

dont forget, you need a cam sync for this to work. no wasted spark 5 cylinder possible on vems due to a firmware limitation (only 8 ignition phase entries. you need 10 minimum to do waste spark on a 5 cyl. I've asked for it, probably a coming soon feature).

before any of this matters, you need triggers first. if you dont get any spark check your triggerlog to make sure the wheel is being read properly by the ecu.

Looks like you were correct Prj. Cam is out of phase... I guess I need to rearrange my ignition triggers or something.

I can not help you further though, because I never set up VEMS from scratch.
I hope you get it sorted out. The ViPeC had a setting with zero point, and all I had to do was add 360 to it.

Took us a while until I got the idea with this though!

Marc says there is no offset configuration for the secondary. I wish there were, that would probably make this a lot easier.
I'm going to tweak my see what tweaking my ignition/injection orders does this evening.
