Hi just wondered what u guys thought on this deal. I have been offered two front big red calipers from an rs2 for £200. I wondered if this was a fair price? i no these calipers come in two parts held together by some bolts but do they give the same stopping power as the 996 conversion? i no there are also some problems with corrosion where the plate is behind the pad is this a cheap job to fix. I got to give an answer to this bloke by 1am today so please help cheers.

I took apart some corroded RS2 calipers and the corrosion was terrible. I wouldnt sell them as they are something i wouldnt want fitted on my car, due to the corrosion. Dont fook with brakes, these things are the only item that slow you down. Do the job rightsigpic

Are these the bigger 322mm calipers, or the original stock RS2 304mm calipers? That's not a bad price really.
Have you been able to get sight of the calipers or are you going to have to buy them blind so to speak? If they are corroded, you could consider re-furbishing them, either do it yourself with parts from VAGParts (eg new sprung plates and new pistons), or there are companies who professionally re-furb calipers, I think you'd be charged about £150/caliper for that sort of service?Ex S2 owner, now running around in an A4 Avant quattro...

Ummh. Isn't the big reds a monoblock type caliper so no bolts to keep it together. The std "small reds" rs2 calipers are machined from 2 sides bolted together. I think.
Anyway £200 for a pair is a bargain even if there is a bit of a filing job with the corrosion. BTDT. The hard part is to get the end plate bolts out as they are also corroded.-Comment

Two parts..
Nope, two parts like the "small" brakes..Originally posted by porkkisUmmh. Isn't the big reds a monoblock type
BTDT on the rear calippers... and the bolts are small *******s, but not a hopeless job... http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9221Originally posted by porkkisThe hard part is to get the end plate bolts out as they are also corroded.Comment

Used calipers are not always to be avoided. My small reds look pretty good after the switch to big red. New back plates and 'corrosion' removal during the last year helped of course.
The seals look good and I will be putting them on e bay when I have had a chance to clean off the brake dust !Alastair
