    sqeak ! sqeak !

    Hello Chums.....

I have just replaced my front discs and pads on the car, but for some reason they keep making an awful squeaking noise....

As I was told I did not use any copper slip on the pads as they have some sort of anti squeal lining on them.

The pads didnt just fall into the caliper either, I had to lightly tap them in place....... should I have shaved a little off the side of the pad ?

tell me what have I done wrong...... please

Pads should be free moving back and forth in the caliper so that the runout in the disc can "knock" them off the disc surface, if they are stiff in the caliper you need to find out why. The noise is probably the pads rubbing against the disc as they are not able to retract from the disc surface.
    What calipers are they?

      Hi David,
Don't shave anything off the pad, all you need to do is gently file the carrier to remove any surface rust and the pads should fit in nicely. And the squeak should be no more.

Too much clearance on the sides of the pads, allowing them to move as they are applied?
                  Or your bolts aren't tight!!

id say it was too much pad clearance, loose bolts sound different

When i replaced the RS2 pads recently with 944T pads I noticed the pads didnt slide in easily. They did when I removed those anti squeal damping pads, but I definitely wanted to retain those.
So I filed the pad backing plate on the top and bottom, just a 1mm on each end and it stop sticking against the disks. It was still a little tight but free to move off the disks.
                      No squeal now.

BTDT are the pads OEM ? If not you need to remove 1mm from pad surface (not backing plate IMHO for safety) or wait for wear.
It was very educational cleaning up my OEM calipers with DS2500 pads. Without grease or backing anti squeak pads they all moved freely when positioned. Except one which on closer inspection the springplate was slightly proud of the caliper body due to 'corrosion' build up. Despite the local specialist cleaning them and replacing spring plate.
Check these issues out and again IMHO use grease. My forum poll seemed to come down in favour of using it.
Good luck. and go big red !!

I did not have a problem with thickness but the height of the pad, so if its thickness then def do not skim the backin plate.

This sounds like plate lift which is a common problem on the RS2 calipers. You should really consider getting the calipers overhauled to remove the corrosion between the caliper body and the plates. You'll need new plates and screws which will likely get destroyed during removal.
