    Help - Fooking ABS sensors...

are well and truly stuck in the rear hub carriers of an Avant I'm working on that the mo... Dagnabit - no amount of teasing, prying, heating and squeezing did the trick... I had to cut them both off at the wires - ****. Not happy ! New ABS sensors aren't cheap - Minnsy will be even unhappier

I've encountered some sticky ones in my time, but these are seized solid - if anyone has a top tip for preventing this happening someone else it would be great.

Also - if anybody has a BTDT for where the rear ABS sensors are connectorised on the Avant Loom (to save me hours of fun removing rear seats etc) it would be awesome !

    Cheers,

          Cheers Martyn,

I found the info re the sensor wiring in the almanac... gotta love the way Audi just word that.

Does the new ABS sensor come with a new sleeve or not ?

I'm getting the old ones machine out tomorrow - and new rear bearings fitted - boy were they noisy !

Oh - you might wanna price up your absolutely best cracking deal on exchange rear calipers for this lovely Avant - both handbrake actuators are very sticky and one caliper has a torn piston dust seal. Hopefully I can break the news to Dave (Minnsy) about that before he reads the board

Theres a few other odds and sods needed - but these are the chunky unexpected items...

          Cheers,

:-) no problem at all. Yup, " Just pull the sensor out" so easy.... ;-) the sleeve, no, separate part @ £5.55+vat each. Hope the old parts come out ok, sounds like you've been busy losing skin off the knuckles!

Re the callipers, they are cheaper from the main dealers! UK has them for a lot less then Germany! I bought my rear from a UK dealers! BUT... check this out:

            main dealer pricing:
            LH exchange rear calliper £99.34+vat
            RH exchange rear calliper £109.00+vat

PAIR of rear exchange callipers ( I think they even come with pads!!) £183.33+vat 8A0 698 680AX

            Work that out!!

Maybe G+S do them cheaper, I didn't check...

I have only come across one ABS sensor that came out 'easily'. All the ones i have had to replace have had to be beaten out using drifts and a hammer!!! Then you find the new ones dont fit as the hole has got smaller with the amount of swelling from the rust!!

Just use a round file until they fit again, I always put a smear of grease on the new ones when installing. Wish they did at the factory

Well if anybody cares - ECP saved the day on this regards the rear calipers. Took a while walking the guy thru his screens with an explanation of what an S2 Avant was - but got there eventually with engine code and 'yes its a quattro'. Not only can they beat the dealership price, but they can have them at my local ECP this afternoon - tremendous !

The rip-off story of the week goes to my local Audi dealer (Wayside in MK) who quoted a whopping 100 quid above the Audi UK price on those calipers. I asked the guy to check his computer again cos I knew that was the wrong price - magically he came back with exactly the price Martyn suggested. Cheeky bahstids... Oh and that was a backorder with 10-day leadtime. You really gotta wonder about Audi in the UK if they are letting franchised dealers get away with this sort of robbery. Had the stupid boy in the parts department actually had a brain cell, he could have rung ECP himself - marked up their price - offered me a parts for tomorrow and I'd have been happy as it saved me time and hassle ringing round.

Hero of the week is Darren Brown at DS Motors (a private VAG garage) in MK. He turned round wishbone bushes, ABS sensor removal and rear bearing swaps on the Avant parts in superbly quick time for very reasonable money. Pleasure to deal with. He doesn't know me from Adam so I thought it only fair to recommend his good work and service for anybody local to MK.

Audi UK (and franchised dealers) are getting to be a real pain in the ****. They just don't seem to be interested in you if you don't fit into the identi-kit A3,4,6 etc boxes.

Years ago (when I had my VW Golf GTI) I seem to remember VW dealers running adds in the press pointing out the prices for parts on older cars had been dropped. They obviously valued their customers who ran older cars. Mind you not sure that is the case now

I agree with Paul on his name and shame section - lets get the b@str@rds

Thats the way, good old drill.

VW still do very cheap parts for older cars, even cars as new as y2k have good prices. Something like an outer CV joint retails at 75 quid for a 2000 passat!! Now thats cheap. Us trade folk even get a good discount on that.

I know just how you feel, when I got my coupe q, the o/s/r sensor was so seized into yhe hub, I had to remove the complete hub and try drifting the sensor out from within the outer CV recess - it didn't work, so I had to DRILL IT OUT!! Nasty job, especially making the hole good enough to accept a new sensor! Pretty nasty. Audi DOES grease up the sensors before installation, (that funny white, wax - like grease) when they get replaced, some kind people just don't bother greasing them up, they simply do a dry entry, eh, ahem, installation.
