    Big Red I up!

... as we say rouind these parts.

Finally got round to it after 18 months of S2 ownership. Got them at 5.15 yesterday evening after work, got home at 6, had them fitted and on a test drive by 10. Felt a little tired and sore in work today but such are the joys of a desk job!

Many thanks to Bry for sorting a bolt on kit for me , highly recommended.

Kit consisted of 996 callipers in red with textar pads, 16 groove 314mm discs that look the biz, custom brackets, solid lines and a couple of bolts, all for a very reasonable price, delivered! They fit perfectly under the 16" Avus alloys and are already better than the standard carp after 50 miles! Got to bed them in and replace the DOT4 stuff I've used for now with DOT5 at a later date.

    Pictures to follow of course.

@ Bry, had a look at the disc/pad fitment and they look fine with around 1-2mm of disc ouside the pads, max.

Andy - glad to hear you're enjoying the better brakes already, good news! Sounds like you got them fitted nice and quickly too, did you take any photos of your work?

Are you considering getting better pads in there or are you happy to stick with the textars? Can I just check with you about your brake fluid - don't use DOT 5.0 in the S2, it's chemically the wrong type of fluid for our cars (being a pure silicone ester fluid, yuk!) - if you want a better fluid than stock, use a DOT 5.1, or one of the racing type super-DOT4s such as Millers, ATE Super or Castrol SRF...

Anyway, nice one -there can't be many S2s left now with stock brakes? It's how the S2 should have been from the factory...

Sorry chaps, too busy fitting them last night and was coverred in grime, brake fluid and copper grease so no photos as yet. Will get some sorted soon enough though, best clean the wheels first though .

Well worth factoring in if buying an S2 with standard brakes or saving up for if you're stuck with knackered G60s like I had

          @ Dan B

Will use the Textars for a bit and see what I think of them. They came with the callipers and are brand spanking new so no pint replacing them for the sake of it. If I did replace them then I was thinking Mintex 1144s as they were very impressive on a previous Golf. Just have to wait and see.

Good stuff... won't be any S2's with stock brakes left at this rate! Are there any pads around the £50-£80 mark that are worth paying a little extra for? Personally I found the textar's fine for everyday road use, can't warrant the extra £100 for Ferrodo's etc... mine are getting replaced at the garage meet, if they last that long... squealling a bit now! Though an emergency stop (bloody deer) from 60mph on a wet road nearly put me through the windscreen 2 nights ago!

DS2500 are the best option, I am Textar at the moment (part of 'Big Red' package) and cannot wait to wear them out. Brake dust, brake dust and more bl**dy brake dust. Oh and they lack the feel of DS 2500 although cannot compare stopping as different calipers.

Cheers. Will have to look for teh Ferrodos then. I think Stu (4wheeldrifter) got a proper good deal on them recently. Will have to save though as they're rather costly!

You'll be looking at around the £150-160 mark for the Ferodos, but IMHO worth the money. They seem to last well too. Have you got hard brake lines all round?

Its funny you should say that......

I *may* be looking for brakes after I get married. (The two events are not linked quite like that! )

                            Cheers,
