Perhaps Dan was referring to the DS3500, they are more the race orientated pad requiring heating up before maximum efficiency....the DS2500's have more bite when stone cold than the Textars do when warm imho !

Whilst I understand and agree with your comments regarding not scrimping on the critical areas such as tyres and brakes, the general consensus amongst the experts is that a 'fast road' pad (i.e. the Textar with it's wide temp range) is better than a 'racing' pad (i.e. the Ferodo with its poorer cold bite) for the following simple reason....
Unless you change pads for track days, we all drive our cars for over 99% of the time one the road, where are brakes are often required to work well when cold and rarely ever get to track temperatures for long periods. On the rare track occasions, if you start to experience 'fade' (which will happen in a controlled way, corner by corner) you can slow down and cool them down, with nothing lost but 1 fast lap.
So I ask you this, is it better to run Textars and be able to perform an emergency stop with cold brakes when a child runs out into the road, or run Ferodos and be able to do an extra lap 3 times a year on track days?
Just my opinion...but wearing the nomex in readiness

Hey, no flame suit required!
My two previous comments on dust, and pad/ disc wear do appear contradictory, but for some reason that I can't explain, the DS2500 produces gallons of dust and yet it is wearing more slowly than the EBC Red. Perhaps the Red pad produces a less black waste material when it wears?
I must re-state my assertion that in my opinion the DS2500 has a BETTER cold pedal bite than the Textar, as well as having a higher braking power across a higher temperature range. It simply is a more sophisticted pad material.
The DS3500 would provide more ultimate braking power and fade resistance, but definintely would exhibit poor cold pedal bite - Ferodo themselves state this, so I wouldn't want to try that on the road.
The EBC Red in my opinon offered lousy cold pedal bite, even though it's marketed as a fast road pad for heavy cars. In your above, very sensible example, I would compare instead the Textar to the EBC Red and ultimately I'd say if that's your budget and your options, go in that case for the Textar. However if you're prepared to spend a bit more money, get the Ferodo.
I'm sounding like a stuck record now for which I apologise, and I'll say it yet again I have no connection to Ferodo or anyone who sells it. Again this is just my opinion, so if someone is able to set up some proper comparative brake test experiments, I'd be very happy to see what the tests really show up...Ex S2 owner, now running around in an A4 Avant quattro...

I had assumed that due to the higher heat capability of the Ferodos, that they were worse at lower speeds (as that is generally the case with most pads). I actually like the Ferodos and always used them on my Audi 80 years ago, so maybe I will take out a mortgage and give them a try.

For yourself? I thought you had the standard 996 calipers?Originally posted by pastures16are these any good got my eye on them

The ones listed are for 'turbo' meaning they're the larger 4pot calipers.
Different calipers - different piston sizes - different pads
Not much use unless you have the early GT3 / Turbo calipers alreadyComment
