Who can lock up their rears ?

Was out for a wee run round the island in my Coupe tonite. Bedding in a new set of stock front pads as the MOT beckons next week... I almost judged the old ones to perfection as I have nearly everything for the 996 conversion.

Anyway... cos I do so few miles on mine, the brakes needed a good workover so as to scrub any rust of the discs all round and to keep the rear adjustment mechanism working.

Whilst my handbrake happily holds the car on a steep hill... I cannot make it lock the rears while moving - even on loose surfaces with the clutch depressed.

Sure my brake fluid could do with a change and yes I have most of the stuff for the rear vented conversion. Neither is going to happen before next weeks MOT.

Just wondering how if my rears are normal are significantly below par... I have a vague memory of being able to lockup the rears on gravel when I first got the car....

Oh the brakes didn't have pong after some stick... You know when you've been blatting around some B-roads, gradually getting heat in the new pads... then you come to a complete halt for a junction and the smell oozes into the cabin. The lovely smell of brakes cooking gently !

Never tried TBH, as I thought having the rear wheels stopped whilst the front are in motion is a big no-go for the centre diff (ala the old MOT test subject)

Actually I hadn't considered the centre diff could be causing this... When trying to provoke it locking the rears I am talking about 20mph on gravel BTW - its not like I'm trying anything drastic.

I have never been able to lock up the rears on any Audi I have ever owned. I suspect it will be even harder with a quattro as right stated, the torsen is working against the brakes....

yup, if i don't the left rear disc/pad drags a bit. I need to sort them out but really cannot be ar*ed at the moment given the cold.

Haven't had any problems with my rear calipers sticking anymore (cheers Dave ) but my handbrake is shocking. It won't hold on a steep hill and seems far worse in extreme cold (?). So, no surprises that it won't lock the rears either. I confess to trying that, on a loose surface too. I would assume it's down to the Torsen diff not allowing the rears to lock (?) You can lock the fronts under heavy braking though right?? I've not managed to do that, even with the ABS off. The tyres just grip...

I locked the rear up by accident when breaking in new pads and discs ready for the MOT.
Instead of locking them up does anyone get the rears breaking loose when changing from 1st to 2nd quickly as this happened the other night and i did not expect it, the roads were fairly dry also.
