    Failed MOT

Need some advice please, my S6 failed it's mot on the efficiency of the handbrake only14%, now i know the cables are adjusted right up because i have tried once before to adjust them and can't get a socket on it (the adjuster rod is now too long even for a deep socket) so what to do, is it new cables or is it more likely the rear calipers giving up????

    Ta

If you remove the wheel and check that the handbrake cable cam/lever can move freely from end to end. If they are both free, your handbrake cables are likely to be stretched and need replacing.

I'm sure you'll know the handbrake should be off when you are inspecting the cable levers of course.

Take a look at the inside of the disc surfaces they could also be badly corroded that can also bring down the efficiency along with cables

I have had a look underneath, discs are fine no probs there, when the handbrake is on the cams on the calipers are turned fine ditto when the handbrake is off, i am pretty sure they are stretched too much with no adjustment left, it's been an issue with the car since i bought it, the adjusting nut is so far up the adjuting rod that i can't even get a deep socket on it, that'll be fun trying to get that off any suggestions???

Hmm, snipping the old cables will remove the pressure exerted on the yoke which may alloy you to undo the nut with your finger tips or a 10mm spanner. I would think this would be enough to do the trick.

Or you could dismantle the hand brake lever from inside the car to unhook the handbrake lever rod/yoke from the ratchet. I've only done this once so I can't really remember the details. If the S6 shares the same type of setup to Audi 80 variants it is very easy to do.

Just had a look at the FA, the handbrake is different, although it does look to be similar in design and function.

Damn, talk about thinking outside the box, never would have thought about snipping the cables, thank you that will work a treat. it's pretty much the same as typ 85/89 quattro's a yolk under the car adjusting rod and nut.
