    Custom brake brackets

I think there was someone who made custom brackets. Here is the spec.

I want to fit RS2 calipers on the front of my S2. I want to use the 314mm A8 disks. I want to keep the 314mm diameter instead of machining down the diameter. Who makes these?

My big red conversion with RS2 callipers and 314mm discs is just about finished. When it's all done and working I will post a list of all the bits used.

The whole thing is being done with O.E parts so there is no need for custom parts. I prefer the O.E route as if anything fails it can be replaced fairly easily without having to have more bits fabricated. The only upgrade part is the goodridge brake lines but standard ones are the same length etc.

I'll put together a list of part numbers and retail prices (as well as the part number for the goodridge hose kit) so it can be compared with other options.

Wouldn't bother with the Big Reds, it is Porsche's old design, you would be much better to use the later 996 Monoblock caliper. You would need to modify the pins the pads sit on to allow the fitment of the 30mm width disc but with custom brackets it is a bolt on job.
Why worry about using custom brackets, if you fook the brackets there is not going to be much left of the car!!!

Sorry, I was running on cruise control. Not thinking.

The 314 will fit using the RS2 bracket.

          Corey,

            @Corey

The big reds were too much of a bargain to say no.

As for custom parts. You forget I work in a main dealer. If it's off the shelf it doesn't cost me anything

I use custom brackets of my own design. I designed the brackets so that they are actually stronger than the stock uprights on the car. My brackets are extremely strong and made from high grade aerospace aluminium, hard anodised with high strength thread inserts for the caliper bolts. Some of the aftermarket kits are quite shocking in reality and I wouldn't part with cash for most of them. Cheapest route would be the combo that uses the RS2 brackets as Ben has done.

Custom brackets would be in the region of 230 to 250 Euros each if the specification is the same as mine. Here's my brackets (disks are 360mm x 32mm):

After 1 year on the car and nearly 20k miles they looked like this. They are a bit tarnished from baked on grime but after a few minutes cleaning they looked like they did when installed.

As installed. Calipers are covered in about 6 months worth of brake dust!!

                      Lee,

You take great pics. The are well focused and well lit. I think there is always a high information content. You can see how something is made, attached, put together, etc. They're good engineering pics. Well done.

You also have access to materials most of us don't which also makes you a lucky sod.

I am an engineer anyway!! All these pics will hurt the dial up users!! I should have done a few how to's over Xmas when I was on a major servicing and maintenance session. Unfortunately a how-to on removing a Volvo 850R engine to change clutch, most gaskets, turbo, seals, belts etc is completely off topic here! LOL!

Ah yes, but then you have access to me!! No harm in asking. Stuff like this is 10 minutes in CAD and about 6 weeks waiting for manufacture. My brackets took longer as I was waiting for my subcontractor to send a big batch of stuff for hard anodising otherwise I would have been stung for a huge charge!! So, in the end, I didn't even pay for the surface treatments. I am working on other stuff at present but slotting hardware design and manufacture as simple as a brake brackets is easy and quick...afterall I have all of the measurements in CAD so tailoring for any caliper and disk is dead easy (quick for me). Wait until you see my new brake bells....they are going to be pure sex!!

whats the pedal travel like on those lee?

                          - I was concerned about moving up to 4 pots with the standard cylinder - but every one of those six pots looks like it is probably the size of a standard Girling cylinder??

No problem at all. In reality, you are only moving the pads a fraction of a mm when you stamp on the pedal. Don't forget that the stock caliper has to move twice as far because of the sliding caliper config. If the disk has too much swash then the pads get knocked back loads, resulting in long travel. It is always good to use a dial guage when fitting disks to that you get them in their flattest orientation. I think my pedal travel is actually shorter with the 6 pots than with the G60 calipers and stock disks.

My piston sizes are dia27.0 x 2; dia31.8 x 2 and dia38.1 x 2 per caliper. I can't remember what size the stock pistons are but I don't think there would be a massive difference if you consider the volume of fluid you move on both systems (G60 is smaller area but pistons travel twice the distance). More pistons mean more force for the given travel of pedal and allows use of huge pads (151.9 x 80.6 overall!!).

Oh yeah, the APs are fitted with decent knockback springs so they maintain a smaller airgap between disks and pads. If someone tells me the size of the stock caliper pistons I'll quantify a comparison of travels and forces for ya. How big is the master cylinder piston?
