Those of us who remember a nice stronger spring made by Ford being a good mod to do will also know that they went nla years ago, i have now found a source for these springs if anyone is interested, i have ordered 2 to see what they are like and if they fit ok £5.00 each if they work fine i will post the source later
Found this guy js@biggred.co.uk on ebay selling all sorts of brake stuff in particular a caliper rebuild kit for sierra cosworth just dropped him a line asking if could supply the springs only and yes he can, whether they are stiffer than the audi ones remains to be seen, even if they aren't i think it's still worth replacing the old rusty ones that will have lost some of their effectiveness by now.
Ford don't sell them anyone and i have even tried a few old ford parts specialists.
Iain:
If your rear calipers are in good working order, those "helper" springs for the emergency brake mechanism are uneccessary.
Installing larger helper springs will only mask the real issue- the emergency brake mechanism inside the caliper is fouled- over time water makes its way through the seal on the mechanism and corrodes the shaft of the caliper emergency brake lever.
I rebuild the calipers in about an hour- when rebuilt, with new a new seal on the emergency brake lever and plenty of high temp synthetic brake grease in the bore, the lever easily moves back and forth only using the pressure of the caliper's piston's spring...
On mine the handbrake cables have gone sticky so the stock spring dosent have the force to fully retract. Stiffer springs should help that issue for me anyway.

the springs will get you by for a while longer, until the corrosion in the cable gets bad enough to stop it functioning all together. mcandmar - you are on borrowed time and should consider replacing the cables when it is convenient, as opposed to waiting until you HAVE to do it ( usually NOT convenient ;-)

I had to do the cables on my S6 for it's mot, right **** of a job took me best part of half a day, access is very limited on that car, not wishing to do it again in a hurry.
Tell me about it, the calipers seized about 6 months which I did nothing about. Just had to buy two new calipers, disk, pads and two wheel bearings! ....that should teach me not to be a lazy **** :-)
