    Brake mod insurance declaration?

Of those of us who have done brake mods, should this be declared to the insurance company? What happens if you don't and you need to make a claim?

Yes it should. My renewal this year was loaded by £15 for uprated brakes (less then 5%) and well worth it.

A couple of companies I go quotes from didn't even charge for upgraded brakes as they saw it as a non-performance upgrade.

Bottom line - an insurance compnay would be within their rights to void your insurnance if you have non-standrd brakes and don't tell them.

      Hi Dan,

      Rusty Dave here again.

I am an insurance assesor and valuer for the Morris Minor Owners Club. Any modification needs to be declared to the insurance company. Some modifications will result in an increased cost others maybe even refused insurance.

Changing the seats can cause insurance problems, changed mountings, seat belt location etc.

Brakes although a safety improvement still need to be mentioned to the company.

Get it in writing!! letter,e-mail etc.

500 bhp engines will probably go un noticed

If you have modified the car and not informed the insurance company your insurance could be declared invalid. Insurance companies do not want to pay out so do not give them a good excuse.

I wanted to do my brake conversion with standard vag/porsche parts, it's not going to plan at the moment....

if there is a problem with the brakes failing then I can say it was all done with manufacturer bits.

      David

Phoned HIC this morning - fessed up to the brake mod. The chap asked me what the kit was, I said it was the parts from the Audi RS2 brakes and he said "great, no problem sir".

                  Sorted.

I had a similar thing today also.

Phoned mine up and asked how much they will want with bigger wheels, new shocks, springs, ARB's and AP Racing disc's.

All they said is they need an engineers report, not a problem
