Anodising will not make the base material stronger, it is a controlled thickness layer of aluminium oxide that is tougher than the alumium below and improves impact toughness.

You will need steel inserts or just have the brackets made from steel instead and have peace of mind.

Can I also put steel inserts in my already drilled brackets, or can I better throw them away? That would be really a waste of money......

And if I can put steel inserts in them. Can I do it myself, or do I need special tools for it?

Re-tap and use the inserts as per the manufacturer's specs. I think you will find it hard to get the 12x1.5mm inserts.

Protects against material migration due to dissimilar metals, basically stops your aluminium crumbling to dust when it is placed next to anything steel and has water (specifically salty water) thrown at it.

The threading issue is with regards the constant undoing and retightening of the bolts in an aluminium thread, they gall over time and the threads get weaker, if you are only going to use the thread once then you are fine with an aluminium thread.

              I wouldn't use a helicoil in aluminium.

              Try a Timesert

Anodise them and use inserts. What grade aluminium you using?

Thanks Corey. When I want to re-use my M12x1.5 bolts do I need to buy the Timesert kit with the M12x1.5 inserts, or is this the outer size spec of the insert? I presume it's the first. I want to keep using my already expensive bolts

Would you recommend to use the standard length of inserts as they come with the set, or use longer ones, that cover the whole thread length?
