back brake sticking - new caliper?

    gents (and ladies if inspired)...
My back right brake is sticking on the 16v. wheel was warm after a run the other day and i can feel it unstick and rub a little as I move off. Left it into the garage and the mechanic said it could need a new caliper when I was giving him the keys. Just want to be educated here. any thoughts on why the brake would be sticking and/or why it would mean a new caliper?
    cheers

Might be lucky and just need a good clean up/grease, thought the calliper on one of those should not be too bad tho.

Agreed. It could also be the handbrake not releasing properly..if you remove the wheel you can check for (correct) free play (or not) on the lever with the h.brake off. Can be the cable binding or the lever housing gunked up.

Hopefully, I had this happen on a coupe gt as I was going down a hill, had a huge long tyre mark but it freed itself off so that was that

"the brakes were binding officer so I felt the best way to free them was to hoof it round a roundabout as quickly as possible"

            ....or is that another thread?

guide pins can be removed cleaned and regreased, sounds to me like it probably could do with popping off, cleaning the brake pad carriers of rust and and old brake dust too, cheaper solution to try than just chucking a new caliper on. Have a look at the how the spring and cam work for the handbrake as well they do stick

that could be a problem then cos this for the back of the 16v, not the s2. I haven't a clue if they're different.

Alex, I don't think i'll need your caliper now mate but the offer is very much appreciated. I asked a guy I know if a particular scrappie has any coupes in and he gave me a decent pair of calipers for £20 he'd picked up ages ago on the off chance he'd ever have use for it.

So now - Anybody got any tips for changing the caliper over early in the morning? And I mean caliper related. not hints to wear a warm jumper
                              cheers
