  • Split piston boot on rear caliper

****** - the piston rubber boot cover seal thing on the left-side rear caliper has split. Can a new one be effectively re-fitted, or is this new caliper time?

Any point in upgrading the rears?

Id have thought that you can fit a new dust seal pretty easily. I bet porsche or another brake part specialist would be able to supply one and then its just a case of squeezing it in between the piston and caliper to fit.

Just noticed its a rear caliper! D'oh! Theres been a few threads recently about upgrading the rears, but im not sure if one has more of an advantage over another.

Upgrading the rears seems like quite a lot of effort/hassle/re-engineering for not a huge benefit?

Where could I get a replacement boot for the rear caliper? Would that be easy to fit and forget, or should it really be a caliper re-build?

I recently bought a caliper rubber seal replacement kit - included the outer rubber seal and inner seals. Managed to get one from a VW main dealer - I think the Audi dealer could also get hold of it but not as quick. Was about £12 I think.
Hope this helps - I may have the part number somewhere

That's great - did you fit it yourself too? If you do have a part number that would be great.
I'll give VAGParts a call, and maybe GSF too, see what's what. .

Yes - fitted it myslef (well, father-in-law did). I had a rear caliper very badly sticking. Stripped caliper and piston and found one inner rubber that was not perfectly straight and the outer seal had a split in. This seal pack contained all rubbers (i'll have a look for the part no. for you). Wasn't too difficult to replace them all. Only thing was - it didn't fix my caliper which still stuck. In the end, bought a re-conditioned one for about £70 which works great. if your caliper works OK - then you should be able to just replace the rubbers.

I believe the calipers are made by Girling. If this is the case then any motor factor or half good car accesory shop should be able to supply you with a rebuild kit.

I am off this weekend to the national restoration show at the National agriculture centre at Stonleigh in Warwickshire also known as Kennilworth ( near Coventry) lots of stands selling brake items for all manner of cars.

Lots of people doing interesting things to cars, mainly pre 1970's

As S2's get older you will need to have more information about keeping an older car on the road.

                Good event.

I'll be there helping a mate of mine man his company stand.

Got my seal kit from VAG parts, I'm not sure it's the right one. There's no external rubber boot seal, and inside it seems to have two piston seals?
I phoned a stealer and they said they don't have them as a replacement part, and what's more that Girling don't make them any more? WTF?

If someone's got the part number for the left rear girling piston boot and seal kit I'd very much appreciate it. Failing that, if anyone's got a spare left rear caliper knocking about that works ok, I'd make them an offer for it!

What part number did you get?

I've had a look on ETKA and get part number 8D0 698 671. This should be a set of seals for a rear calliper (they are not handed).

Strangely ETKA lists the callipers as Girling on the Coupe and Lucas on the Avant. All the part numbers are the same though.

I've left the box at home, will check what the number was in a little while... The Stealer said that Girling was no longer listed, had been replaced by Lucas.

They wanted to charge me £145 for a new piston? WTF?!

Looks like your parts guy wasn't the best

I've just checked your profile to see you've got a coupe. On the ETKA diagram for the coupe the part listed when you select the seals is a new caliper at £145.

If you look down the parts list there is a seal kit listed (item 16 for those with ETKA to hand) which is the part number 8D0 698 671.

According to ETKA the kit should consist of:

                        seal x2
                        protective cap x2
                        assembly lubricant (30ml) x1

It's listed for both Girling and Lucas calipers (I don't know whether you get the appropriate seals for each type or if they are all the same) and shows as fitting just about everything VW/Audi out there.

                        Retail is £13.38 inc VAT

                        Ben

NOTE: It would appear I was talking out of my **** about the brakes being the same on avants and coupes. My bad.

that seal kit sounds like the one I got a month or so ago. I ended up getting it from a VW dealer - the Audi dealer could get it but didn't have one in stock. The contents and the price sound like what I received. They definatly can be got. After replacing the seals - my caliper still stuck on - I ended up getting a re-conditioned one (looks brand new) for about £70.

@Ben - thanks for the part number - this is exactly the part that I received from VAGParts, so it looks like it's the right stuff and the stealer was wrong!
In the box I have 2x big rubber seals and 2x smaller piston ring seals, plus a sachet of red muck. Good stuff. Must get to doing this before the track day in May!

Thanks for the help everybody, I love this forum

The caliper was the same as a Ford Scorpio caliper and so a Fraud dealer should be able to help.

Fourring spares at Thorne had some new calipers for £70 outright.
