I know there has been a lot posted on this before, but can anyone give me the best, definative way to upgrade the rear brakes easily & cheaply?

Rear brakes do far less work than front brakes so typically (street car), upgrading rear brakes is not worth the money spent. Make sure your front brakes are upgraded (e.g. to some Brembo/Porsche front caliper, probably using RS2 brackets) before thinking about the rear brakes. If you still want to do something for the rear brakes then I (personal opinion) suggest that you could clean and lube OE sliders and pins, add new rotors, new pads (Metalmaster type), new brake fluid and pressure bleed the brakes.

If you thought you wanted more, then you could adapt some of the ideas in this DIY focused towards B5 A4s:

    Hope that helps a bit.

I have to disagree with UrS4boy, as the only difference between the brakes on the coupe and a UrS car, in the states, is the rear brakes. 400+ pounds in the UrS and the only difference in the braking system, Audi upgraded the rear brakes. Must make a difference.

Simple upgrade to a coupe is:

Below you will see two possible ideas for rear vented rotors. I tried a couple of different calipers and rotors, basically running with ideas I got from other original thinkers on other forums. These are a couple of different combinations using two different rotors, two different calipers, both...

As an update to this site, a B6/B7 S4 rear rotor can be used. Just needs to be turn down from 300mm diameter to 280 diameter, other wise it has a similiar offset to the New Beetle/early A3 rotor.

Look for my '8E0 rear brake' thread... Theres a Coupe and Avant way to go. In summary below, but details on S2central.net in the technical/brakes area -

        Coupe -
        B6/B7 Audi S4 rear discs (300x22) - hence 8E0 get it ?
        Reduce diameter to 280mm
A8/S8 rear carriers for 280x22 discs
UR/S6 rear calipers - handbrake and union are perfect
S8 rear caliper is lighter, more expensive and requires minor tweaks to fit

        Avant
Use same 300x22 disc from 8E0 S4 - keep it that size this time
Fit it with 8E0 carriers and calipers - NOT cheap from new
Handbrake is almost perfect... needs a small tweak I think
Use the hydraulic hose specified for the 8E0 caliper also - correct end unions

Handbrake orientation is different on Coupe & Avant - that is the only reason you cannot easily use the 8E0 calipers on rear of Coupe. Somebody might do it one day.

Was going to make my own thread, but then I came across this...

I've got the rear calipers off a 996 Carerra 2. I've fitted the fronts but havn't done the rears yet. I'd love to have both done, but not sure if its safe having brakes from a rear-engine'd car on my VERY front engine'd S2 coupe!

          What would you guys advise?

How are you going to get round the handbrake issue if you use monoblocks on the rear?

I have a pair of RS2 rear callipers waiting to go on my 3B. The only satisfatory solution to the hand brake problem is to use a seperate cable operated handbrake calliper on each side.

I'm bot planning on fitting them for a while yet as I have more important thing's to sort out first. But when I do it I will post a thread to let you know how I get on.

Cheers, will make interesting reading whenever you get round to doing it! Same for me, I'm not in any real hurry to sort it out, as the fronts seem to stop me well enough! Its just the back brakes look pretty crap in comparison!!

                    Hi Paul,
Ive located the parts you suggest apart from the discs. Do you know the part numbers of those? I can imagine the shrug of the shoulders if I go to the stealers & just ask for a pair of discs for an S4
Would Martyn at VAG parts know the correct ones?
                    cheers,
                    Simon

I cant seem to get hold of Paul, can anyone else help here please? He says above that A8 OR S8 carriers will do. Is this correct? All the other threads on this subject only mention S8. Are the S8 & A8 carriers the same?
Ive located calipers & A8 carriers but dont want to buy the wrong parts!

I didn't know the R8 used separate handbrake callipers. Not a bad idea, however I expect they don't come cheap. I was thinking of using Willwood handbrake calliper's.

There are a few audi's with the handbrake callipers its just the mounting them which seems to be the problem afaik
