Uneven Rear disc and pad wear.

My rear drivers side disc has uneven wear on its outer face, there is a rusty raised band on the outer circumference of the disc.

I've stripped it down and found that the inner face has even wear and is nice and shiney as you would expect.

Both pads have plently of meat on them as do the discs, except for the outer pad which of course has a sloped profile because of this ridge.

Consequently my handbrake holding power isn't so good. What causes this exactly and what do I need to do to fix it? I could look into getting the discs skimmed and replacing the pads but I fear that the problem will just reoccur if I haven't addressed the root cause.

The carrier and guide pins look to be in good shape.

    Thanks.

Sounds pretty normal to me. Make sure that the slider pins are moving freely and also that the piston and handbrake are free, you could go as far as rebuilding the callipers or having them re-furbished but that might be overkill.

If you want to save a few quid then get the discs skimmed to remove the ridges whe you fit new pads but at £16 for a Brembo rear disc from GSF it might not be economical.

Hi Andy, the caliper was replaced with a remanufactured one from GSF a few years back and is still servicable the handbrake cam still moves freely. The guide pin boots were replaced at the time of fitting and still look fine.

      You've just jogged my memory.
This carrier may have had a seized guide bolt in it at one time which was machined out. I've got a feeeling a new guide pin can move a little more side to side than it neighbour inside the carrier. I think this may be the problem.

I can't be certain it was this side but it certainly worth looking at. I have a spare carrier, so I can try this for starters.

I was comparing this side to the nearside which has even wear across the entire disc surface (which I considered normal).

Cool, sounds like you've identified the reasons for this one If the wear is different side to side the I agree that there's a problem to find. Get the new carrier copper greased up and ready to play and get it on there, 10 minute job if the bolts are not seized.

I've started using a little locktite on brake bolts after losing a front carrier bolt on the way home from ADI last year . Not sure the rears are going to be a prob but better to be safe than sorry if you're planning on some high speed thrashing any time soon Just my 2P there.
