Porsch rs2 upgrade front, rear conversion needed?

    Hi,

I have the large front RS2-calipers mounted on my s2 together with stock rear brakes.

I have problems that the car is very instabile when braking from higher velocities, ie >100 km/h. I wonder if someone else has gotten this problem when converting to porsche frontbrakes or is it just my front shocks/springs that are too worn?

The car behaves like the rearwheels is about to overtake the front wheels everytime i brake from higher speeds. You have to constantly parry.

Sounds like your car has too much braking at the front, check your shocks/springs and do a search for the bolt on rear brake upgrade that s2central did a write up about

If it is a brake issue it is more likely that the rear brakes are shot and need to be refurbished. Good S2 rears nicely balance the 996 Monoblocks upfront.

However as Pete says, it could also be worn suspension/steering parts or a tracking issue that is unsettling the car.

      Cheers n

Worn springs if the front end is nose diving but it also happens with new springs, happened on my Coupe with Monoblocks until I fitted h&r springs.

          Thanks for the help.

I think i can rule out worn springs/absorbers, a mechanic tested them and the only thing was that the rear was slightly softer (they´re an H&R cupkitt setup).

I´m going to the Swedish Tüw in a month so i guess they will tell if something is wrong with the rear braking force.

I forgot to mention the wheels, they are 18x225x40 and it´s some cheap chinese brand called a-one (never heard of), it´s very tracksensitive when driving around.

I'm running 235/35/19 on mine currently on koni's at the front and standard everything else with monoblocs and if I do hard braking the back end lifts up well badly.

when I first got the brakes fitted I was able to get the wheels up into the arches at the front and rub the archs under hard braking.

Even nose diving due to soft springs would not necessarily cause your back end to want to come past as long as the rears are working well. Until I recently upgraded to Konis (still with old springs ), I ran 996 Monos on standard old suspension. True, I could trigger the ABS system on a dry road with the new fronts, but the back end was refreshed at the same time (new disks and pads) and the balance was fine.

Remember that on the quattro the rears can do more braking without the need for a brake bias/balance system on the rear axle as the rears should not lock up. If your rears have not been renewed, one or both could be poor, meaning there is little or imbalanced braking at the rear.

You have not specifically mentioned nose diving but what happens when you brake from high speed, starting slowly with increasing pressure? Does the car pull to one side under the normal braking or is it only when braking hard?

If the car pulls, swerves or feels out of balance under normal braking then as I said before it could be tracking or a left/right brake balance issue at the front. If it only happens when you brake hard then it is more likely to be poor rear brakes (one or both) or front suspension - by that I mean one side softer than the other.

My money is still on tracking first and rear brakes second
