    Hard Braking in an RS2?

Ive just purchased an Audi RS2. Last night I took it out for a blat on a nice country road. After some hard braking a "!" icon came up on the dash.
    What does this mean?

It means either worn brakepads, or low brakefluid level. But three of my four S2,s have randomly shown that icon even when nothing is wrong. As far as i know it´s quite common.

there a quite a few different potential causes for this, low brake fluid, low hydraulic fluid, low hydraulic pressure, faulty sensors, tired bomb etc.
Its is common as there can be a lot of different things causing it

Do the pump pedal thingy test and that will give you a good idea of whats up.

The (!) alert is potentially a serious problem. It has NOTHING to do with ABS - check www.s2central.net and find your way to the technical pages - running gear and brakes and read up on the brake pressure accumulator.

The S2 and RS2 have hydraulic servo assistance - NOT vacuum... Problem could be low hydraulic pressure, low fluid level, faulty 'bomb' or some faulty sensors of course. I suggest you investigate ASAP - brakes are important... It could be marginal / intermittent problem, but you wont know until properly diagnosed.

A very popular fault is that the wrong fluid is used by garages who ignore the factory fitted sticker and service info. You MUST have a green coloured mineral fluid in that system - called G002000 and only available from VAG - it is cheap though and widely available (well in UK and EU anyway).

The wrong fluid can screw up your entire hydraulics - pump, bomb, servo and power steering if left in there for too long.

Oh and if fitted with brake pad sensors (only fitted on some cars/territory) then yes it could just be a pad level warning - again get it checked !

Thanks for the advice. The car is getting serviced next week so Ill get it looked at then.
The brakes feel very strong and have a very firm pedal.

                    That is REALLY dumb advice!

As Paul says, it is most likely that this is low fluid and therefore fixed in 2 minutes but it could also be low pressure and therefore very serious.

Anything involving the braking system should NEVER be dismissed out of hand as 'nothing to worry about'. You might think that on your car but to tell someone else to ignore a brake warning light is pure stupidity

If it's first thing in the morning ONLY, AND your car passes the Bomb pedal pump test then, Yes it is nothing to worry about. (See www.s2central.net for Bomb Test)

Mine and lot's of others have a Brake Bomb that slowly loses pressure over a number of hours and throws the (!) warning when we start the car.

If it does (!) whilst driving, I suggest you pull over and at least inpect all the fluids as mentioned above.

A really tired bomb can trigger that warning even with one hard stab on brakes while running.
All quattro products have been dermatologically tested, and are safe for daily use.

                            Maybe a daft question here

                            G002000 is Audi`s Recommended Hydraulic fluid - Dot 4?

                            and / or

                            as per s2central

                            "Use the highest rated Dot 4 U can find" = G002000 ?

Confused and concerned as about to bleed clutch Master cylinder and then brakes etc using the same DOT 4

Brake fluid and power steering fluid is not the same.

Use Dot 4 for the brakes and G004000 for the power steering fluid. This also does the pressure for the brake assistance.

                              Cheers.
