I believe the legal requirement is to be able to hold the car on a 1 in 3 (or 4) slope. Obviously this means that performance should be proportional to kurb weight. I know this doesn't help you much!!

      - Insert a screwdriver through the hole of the brake disc and turn the adjusting device untill the wheel can no longer be turned. Then, turn back adjusting device again untill the wheel rotated freely, then turn back a further 2 detents (slacken)
      - Apply handbrake lever 2 detents and turn adjusting nut sufficiently untill both wheels can no longer be rotated easily by hand (when handbrake lever is applid 4 detents, wheels must be locked).
      - Slacken handbrake lever sufficiently and check whether both wheels now rotate freey.

quick question, does the car have to be lifted and this done on the 2 cables simultaneously before lifting the handbrake for the 2 clicks?

I did both sides simultaneously on mine. Not sure if that is necessary though.

NOooo Just pull on the handbrake a few times at low speed & keep it applied for 1/4 mile. Then take it somewhere else !!

Handbrake sorted!!! Thanks guys,i have forgoten in Greece all my workshop manuals and im going to get them back in christmas,so that information was crucial! Now the car grabs in 2 clicks of the handbrake.I have done it this way so that the pads are close to the discs and maybe get cleaned as well from all the dirt.(alternate way of cleaning that Alg suggested!

mainly because the pads get very muddy and that way they are cleaned up over against the drum, thats the only logic. But you still have to tighten them afterwards anyway

would it be wise to also spray some WD40 on the spring mechanisms, gently so as to keep them from gettting stuck?

well mine have been refurbed shortly after i bought the car,but i dont recall that mechanic using lots of greace. From all i could see whilst turning the brake disc,it could use some srayin...i just wasnt sure if that would cause problems with the pads
