    ABS turning on and off!!!

    Hi all,
I'm having a bit of a problem with my ABS. It on an 89' CQ, it has a switch on the dash for turning the ABS on and off but it keeps turning on and off by its self. Thought I might have been the relay but iv'e just replaced that and its not solved the problem! Any help would be great.
    Cheers
    Mike

Could be the sensors. Have they all got the correct spacing? I had this on my S2 once after i had had them out. I must have put them back in to far. As a result of that the ABS used to switch off all the time.

    HTH.

      Thanks Bo,
I have no idea if the sensors have the corect spacing but i'm having all the hubs changes soon so the sensors should all be sorted then.
      cheers

Yeah, when the light is on it indicates that ABS is off. If you then press the switch once on and then off again it should re-enable the ABS for a short time if its sensor related. Mine was turning off every so often at slow speeds and while turning corners. I think the spacing was ~1mm out.

There is a tool for measureing the correct spacing.
But im sure the garage can do that for you when you get the hubs changed.

              Good Luck.

Yep my CQ did the same, it was a wheel sensor dropping out occasionally. It's safer to drive with it switched off I think, I remember that it made the brakes scary at the first stop in the mornings if you left it switched on.

I had a lot of problems on an S2 recently, when i got the car the abs light was permanently on.Vagcom was saying one of the sensors was faulty, but it was infact the sensor ring had disintegrated so had to change the whole CV joint. This cleared the code and turned the light off but then it would start coming on here and there as the boost was rising, turned out to be the little one way valve under the rear seat that was causing it,took one off a 20vcq and was fine after that.
