    Seal conditioning fluid

Just rebuilding my RS2 brembo's with new seals (£100 for new seals + boots!!??)
Instructions say that I need to soak the new piston seals in 'Seal Conditioning Fluid' for 24hrs before fitting.
    WTF is all this about?
Looking on interweb it seems that by conditioning the seals, there is no bedding in time and no 'roll back' of the seals in the cylinders
Sounds a bit ott to me - anyone else fitted new seals to Brembo's with this stuff?
I was thinking of just soaking them in dot 4 for the night???

I think it might just be some brake fluid too. Check with Brembo maybe

I know what Brembo will say "of course you need our overpriced castor oil relabeled as scf to make it sound technical and allow us to charge more"
Someone here must have fitted new seals at some point

I've use the seal conditoner supplied with the sealkit for standard rear brakes. It makes the rubber more supple and helps prevent the rubber from drying out and perishing. I would definitely use it. I can't remember the length of time I immersed the seals in the red contioning fluid. I think it was maybe for an hour as per the instructions.

Heres an excellent write up for a BMW E30 which you might find helpful. They show the piston being lubricated with brake fluid and doesn't show the seals being conditoned as you might expect. Anyway, I hope this is of some help to you.

              .

More than likely this SCF stuff is just kinder on you and the environment rather than having brake fluid splashed all over the place when you're rebuilding a caliper.

Well, for the sake of another £15 I've ordered the damn stuff.
Its cost me as much to recon these Brembo calipers as it did to buy them in the first place
And I've fitted new outer cv joint, new inner cv boot, 2 new front bearings, new rear calipers, discs and pads, new front discs and pads, and every job I do, I found at least 2 other jobs that need doing when will it end???????

Sorry, I forgot to add the link I mentioned.

PS. I also recall that the supplied conditoner I used did make the seals noticably more pliant/soft. HTH The conditoner was in a little sachet which was enough to bo two sets of seals.

£15 pounds does sound extortionate, how many ml/litres does that buy you?

yep extortionate, just like the extorsion of new rubber seals & boots costing over £100!!!!
It buys 250 mls, enough for a few goes I guess. (not that I expect to be doing it very often!!)

Where did you buy the seals and boots kit from? I need to do mine as I have a sticking caliper.

Maybe I could buy the remains of your SCF from you if you only use a bit? In fact, use only a thimble full, then sell it to me for £14. I'll use a thimble full and sell it on for £13 and so on until 15 of us have recon'd oyr calipers

                          Cheers n

                            Good idea
It works out as 6p per ml, so I'll see if I can get away with only using 10ml or so
The seals come from GPR (Grand Prix racewear) they are the only place I found I could get them. To be honest, the boots are def worth getting, but the piston seals didn't actually need replacing I still have all the old ones, so if you don't mind your car being off the road for a few days, strip the caliper, find out which seals you need and I can send you some 2nd hand ones if you like? That way you wont need the seal conditioning fluid either!!!
