    Seized bolts!!

Any suggestions on the best way to loosen the mounting bolts on the front calipers? Ive given them liberal coatings of WD40 and left it to soak in but it hasn't seemed to do the trick.

I am hesitant to put a blowtorch (not that i own one) anywhere near something with rubber seals/pipes etc but i have heard that is a good way of getting bolts off.

    Thanks for your help.

could you not get hold of an impact wrench?
on occasion i've found striking seized bolts with a hammer can brake the rust-not sure if that's wise where brakes are concerned though
    It's a love/hate relationship with the S2,i love it,it hates me

dont think using a blowtorch would cause much an issue since the seals on the calipers are high temp anyway and you aint using the flames directly at the seals

have you tried air impact wrench on them, how i get most difficult bolts off, bent a draper expert t-bar on a bolt ended up un-doing with air wrench, should seen look my friends face as i destroyed his t-bar, i actually though was just deflecting untill point were it went really plastic

edit, i type too slow people got in there before me

Turn the wheel onto full lock so you can get a huge breaker bar in there.

Sadly I don't know anyone around here with an impact wrench and I don't know any of the guys in the workshops at work never mind getting my car in through the security gates.

            Nope they haven't rounded off.

Is an impact socket any different to a normal socket?

Ive tried giving the breaker bar i have a tap but its not the best, as its 3/8s so i am using a 3/8-1/2 converter which my socket is, this means the is a bit of play when you give it a 'tap' with the hammer.

I had to do this 2 months ago.......had to remove hub and weld 16mm bolts to the caliper carrier bolts and then get a big spanner on the 16mm bolts whilst holiding the hub in a vice.
              Good luck!
p.s. both sides were the same

If you ain't got the right tools you will struggle. You need you 1/2 sockets on your 1/2 breaker bar then gain the required access and put all your weight on it fast and steady as you can. That WILL crack it. (Or your tools...)

                  Good luck.

                    Thanks all.

Oh well, looks like I am off to the tool shop tomorrow to get the biggest breaker bar i can. Hopefully a dab of copper grease will make this much easier next time (which wont be all that long as I'm guessing my new EBC pads will last less time than the OEM ones they are replacing).

                        Robert,

I will brink my breaker bar to work tomorrow. If you can get to AP Racing either at 1pm or 5pm then you can borrow it (although I'd need it back for the weekend).
It's only a 2ft bar but it did the job with mine. I did use an electric impact gun on my caliper bolts to crack them loose but if you can get in there with this bar (which i did) then you should be able to undo them.

I can't remember what socket it is but can lend you this too if someone reminds me.

                        Dan

If buying after market pads then don't expect to get the bolts included. It is wise to renew the caliper bolts (321 615 141 ) at every pad change.

Replacing the front discs is a little more problematic on the S2 as it requires the tightly mounted caliper carrier bracket to be removed. These can put up a good fight. The two 19mm headed M12 bolts which hold the front caliper carriers into the hub are subject to corrosion so one needs to be very careful in removing these bolts. The carrier mounting bolts ( N 901 740 01) should of course be renewed when the discs are replaced.
Can somone confirm these are the correct part no's for a '94 Avant as my calliper carrier bolts have a 17mm hex.

                            Thanks all!

Especially Dan for lending me the breaker bar. (any chance i can return it before work 7:45 ish tomorrow?)

An impact socket is usually single hex, where as a normal socket is double hex:
