    s2 avant rear

S2avant has come out with loads of brake porn for the avant, and looking at rear brake upgrades for the coupe i cant find what i consider to be an ideal bolt-on upgrade. S2central.net provides information on the rear brakes, and Paul has a good rear upgrade for the coupe.

I know that the rear calipers and handbrake on the avant are different to that of the coupe, but in what way, and how easy would it be to convert it over as this seems to allow larger brake upgrades.

Also it says that the rear suspension is different - in what way? Would this effect the size or hat height of the disc that would fit either the coupe or avant?

    Cheers

@Sonic - the 300x22mm 8E0 (B7 platform) discs, carriers and calipers bolts straight onto rear of B4 Avant or Sedan... S2Avant done this a long time ago... We collaborated on info on parts way back when and he sourced the 8E0 stuff for me to try... It was since sold onto Ross which I expect got fitted to his Avant - or maybe still lying in a box. Those 8E0 calipers sit in the right place to pickup Avant/Sedan handbrake cables. I had to make a hybrid of parts with a modified version of the 8E0 disc to make good for Coupe bolt on.

        Hi Paul,

What im wondering is whether the rear suspension makes any difference to the hat height required as bens latest crazy 330mm setup needs a 10mm spacer. Is this anymore likely to work on the coupe?

Your 280mm coupe rear upgrade looks great, and is prime candidate for being used, but i dont understand the handbrake differences to know why you can have 300mm on the avant and have to cut it down to 280mm for the coupe.

        Cheers

im looking at doing this at the moment. ordered the carriers from Quattro corner on that offer.

not sure what calipers i need yet or where to get them. anybody got a source. i may try QC again but not sure if pete has the rr/urS6 caliper?

sonic - i think its the orientation of the handbrake mechanism on the caliper that requires the rr caliper. looks like its the same as the 100q/200Q also.

Cheers. So is it worth looking at converting the coupe over to an avant-styley setup?

I know paul looked into this, im guessing more trouble than its worth?

The reason i say is because i dont like the idea of cutting down discs each time, cheap or not, and the parts for the 330mm setup can be bought for about the same price as the 280mm setup.

id be happy with the 280mm at the back.

i got the gt2 6 pots at the front and its a little powerful on the front.

currently trying to source the calipers required. there are lots of types. the avant setup looks easier to put together but it doesn't fit the handbrake setup. 20mm on rears wont make much difference but i can see the hassle fitting new will cause. they last a while though.

i really want to look into the impreza sti setup with the drums and large rear setup and at least twin pots but its a hassle job i dont wanna start.

Don't forget the aspect of balance as well - it may be tempting to go for the big rear brake upgrade at the same price, but this will neccesitate a front upgrade as well!! I don't think it'll work well having bigger brakes on the rear than the front...

Can't help, although Paul has done LOADS of research with parts in hand so is best qualified to answer! I believe the questions you have are,

                    (1) what effect does the 10mm spacer have with the Coupe, with your ET35 wheels (ie will it cause rubbing?)

                    (2) What issues would the different handbrake cause? (And what work-arounds could be used)

This would be an upgrade i'd do later in the day after upgrading the fronts!

Going to Porsche Monoblocks upfront with 323 discs is more than ample for most spirited drives.

i agree. you dont want bigger rears than fronts even if the bias is gonna limit it.

mines a bit too fronty with the 6 pots so i wanna balance it a little. it feels like the car is piling up on itself.

Rear calipers on the Coupe are behind / trailing the disc whilst on Avant/Sedan the calipers are ahead / leading the disc... Thats why the handbrake operation is different and same calipers dont swap over - you'd need to get into handbrake cable extensions/mods for such fun and games... Non trivial with lots of running gear in the way !

I have NOT tried any spacers on the Coupe - no need with those 8E0 discs - the offset is near perfect - only small washers needed on carrier to adjust for 1-2mm to centre everything sweetly.

                            I have very little practical knowledge on this one but;

Is it not simply the cable run / angle of approach to the rear caliper on the coupe that dictates what type of caliper you may use.

i.e. It is the design of the coupe rear bodyshell and suspension that dictates the handbrake cable entry run / position and therefore caliper type, rather than the type of caliper you have or the suspension.

You must have the correct entry position on the rear caliper on the coupe otherwise it will never work, which is why none of the Avant solutions suit the Coupe at ALL?

                            Cheers,

                            Steve.

As Steve has said the problem with the coupe is the orientation of the handbrake cable to the caliper.

On the Avant the caliper is trailing (at the rear of the disc) this is the same as the rest of the A4/A6 platform cars from which the upgrades are taken. The only issue is the handbrake cable length as bigger the rear disc the further the caliper moves to the rear hence the need for a longer cable.

On the coupe the caliper is leading (in front of the disc) so handbrake cable length is not an issue as the caliper moves closer to the front of the car as the disc size increases.

AFIAK (I've not looked at the brakes on a coupe close up) the problem with coupe is that the handbrake cable entry is to the side rather than from the bottom. Without looking at the cable routing and the two types of caliper side by side I couldn't offer a solution. I know Paul has done comparisons when he had the 8E0 kit.

I would suggest the 300mm setup is plenty big enough for most people and offers the most simple bolt on solution, provided the handbrake cable can be solved. The 330mm setup requires irreversible modification to the rear hubs coupled with custom spacers to fit.
