  • Ducting for brakes

    I want to install ducting on my urS6 to increase airflow to the brakes for a trackday.

    Has anyone tried this before or know where I can get hold of some ducting?

      I use this setup in my S2, but my brakes are 370mm.

        I used parts from Merlin Motorsport and installed ducts on the front bumper with ducting hose leading back to the discs. Works well, but it's not subtle!

          Interesting - I was looking at the Merlin parts. I don't have any front fogs in my bumper so was thinking I could squeeze the intakes into those slots.

          What do you mean by 'not subtle'? I was kind of assuming it would be pretty much invisible! Did you use the aluminium ducting? I imagine the discs probably get up over 500C on a track day...

            Stiglet, ya got any pictures of what oyu have done by any chance?

            Id imagine you could also run from the grilles below the fogs across the bottom couldnt you?

              I mean not subtle as in "two huge scoops stuck to the front bumper ". Because of various things behind the bumper and the need for a nice smooth routing of the hose (and because I decided to fit it the night before a trackday ) I ended up just riveting the ducts onto the front of the bumper below the grill. You can't really use the fogs because there's too much stuff behind there, you'd end up with so many bends in the hose that it probably wouldn't flow much air.

              And yes, going by the pads I've managed to fade your brake discs probably aren't far off 400 deg.

              I will find a better way of doing it but for now it does the job! You can fit it behind the grill and it would then be invisible, but routing the hose becomes a little difficult on the pass side because of the radiator.

              All this is bearing in mind I used 63mm hose, you could probably get away with using a smaller dia.

              Only pic i've got is from the trackday... Be warned, if your name is Fat Audi 80 look away now!

                Haha! Looks great! I might have a bit more space on the S6, but if I can't be subtle I'll probably end up with something similar and then dismantle it after the track day.

                How close to the discs did your ducting run, where did you fix the ends of the pipe to, and what did you fix them with (presumably not a cable tie!)

                  Yes I used cable ties!

                  Wouldn't advise you do the same, use jubilee clips with some rubber inner tube behind? That's what I plan to do anyway. Like I say, all done in a hurry!

                  I just routed it back to the subframe, then along the wishbone as far as the first bolt on the ball joint. Any further and it rubs on full lock.

                    I see it was long time ago ... would be interesting to see pics ... how you have secured the hose near brake disk

                      I used this route to fit ducts on my brakes, I did have to trim down the ducting to clear the anti roll bar properly and make a couple of short brackets for mounts, but not at all difficult to fit.

                        Hi Sailaz, I used ducts from the same supplier I got the ducting hose from and routed the hoses back along the subframe / wishbones. They aren't attached to the hubs in any way, just the wishbones. The idea is that most of your braking will be done when the steering is straight, so it's not that necessary to have the ducting turn with the steering. So long as the ducts face the discs when the steering is straight ahead it will work when it needs to. I found a combination of jubilee clips and plastic spacers (to spread the pressure of the jubilees on the soft hose material) works best as a permanent solution. I did use simple cable ties when i first fitted it as just a temporary solution until I knew it was working, but that's not recommended as they'll fatigue out eventually from suspension movement. Hope it helps.

                          Phaeton has bigger and smaller ducts. Fit the one that match better you brake disc size

                            Phaeton also makes efficient use of what little ducting it has, but at the time i didn't have access to a wind tunnel
