brakes. Are they supposed to be like this?

It was Pinkster so I went to see my brother with his kids. They live some 300 km from my town and its a great ride usually. I brought the missus and my father with me so we were three in the car. Thi8s was the first time ever I brought to persons with me and when trying to lessen the speed I was surprised to feel how hard it was to stop from lets say 160. First, I needed to step on the pedal real hardly to decelerate. Second: at the end of the braking the deceleration almost ceased. Is this normal? My pads are almost new, ATE brand, fluid new, the missus is also almost new. Am I getting old or is it the same with your cars?

Sounds like they were fading, if they are brand new pads etc they will need bedding in before you get full effect of them.

Standard brakes are toss. You have to drive a non standard braked car to really appreciate how ***** they are. Grooved discs are your next upgrade, in my opinion. Fit straight on, won't fade. I never got em to fade even after a 160 slowdown to 50. And I don't use Km/hour.

After that, how deep is your wallet? Porsche jobs are your next best bet, then AP. Which reminds me, gotta post some pictures up later on...

Must admit the Porsche brakes are fantastic!, I'm sure previous owner had the AP brakes on before hand and exchange them for Porsche ones as they were better and easier on the pocket (Discs were like £300-400 pounds!)

On my other car, the 2,8 coupe quattro there are the ATE powerdiscs, grooved ones. At that time I did not feel too much difference between the stock and the ATE grooved ones but now if I compare the S2 with the other car, the other car's deceleration is some 30-40% better. ATE doesn't sell grooved discs for the S2 though. If anyone could suggest a company that does, please do it. I would like to keep my wheels which are 17 A6 new ones. I suppose there is not much use in applying S6 discs with the stock brakes....

              brakes

Most of us agree that the G60's are pretty poor. But I think it is a misconception that they fade after one stop. Have you checked your discs and pads? Remember, carrying 2 extra people around makes a difference. It is why racers spend so much effort gutting their cars. It makes a difference in acceleration.

Are your pads new? You do have to bed your pads if they are new. You should also know that if you use race pads, they may not work as well street pads when cold.

Do you have a soft pedal? Maybe bleed the brakes and put in some fresh fluid.

                Horvath, what is the fluid?
Good fluid makes for good brakes. If you put the wrong fluid in it will upset the braking.

As a bare minimum it needs to be good quality DOT4 ( not DOT5) maybe DOT5.1 I have no thoughts yet.

I am installing Porsche Brakes on my Audi ( when I've fixed the Mondeo ) using good quality DOT4. I saw some Castrol SRF for sale on Saturday which was cheap, still £15 a litre though.

You know you want the Porsche Brakes!!

David, S2s have power brakes (no servo for obvious reasons) and must only use the special VAG fluid (G1000). Anything else ruins seals and the pump.......

well I use Dot 5.1 and it's fine. Are you sure you don't mean the hydraulic fluid?

Paul now you have better brakes I seriously fear for your safety. You drive pretty fast with standard s2 brakes so with uprated ones .....................

Thanks for the observation James, There are 2 sections, the Hydraulic which uses the G1000 powers the bomb via the pump and the brake section which uses fluid such as DOT4.

                          James,

Its also worth noting audi have you belive you can only use their fluids but there is alot more choice out there, most will say what specification it meets and the majority nowadays meet audi specs.

Yep, standard S2 stock brakes are pants. Many different ways to upgrade brakes being done here, but all involve larger discs and more pistons.
Brake fluid -definitely worth upgrading anyway - I'm using DOT5.1 which is absoluotely fine. Don't use silicone-based brake fluids -ie DOT5 . Also, don't confuse brake fluid with the powersteering hydraulic fluid, which you're absoluotely right must be the Audi stuff or your seals will all rot.
