brakes. Are they supposed to be like this?

I've got g2000 as the fluid for the hydraulic section. I'm not sure what G1000 is for.

Page 114 of my Audi Manual says "only use our genuine brake fluid specification to US standard FMVSS 116 DOT4) fluid must be new"

Forgot to mention the S2 has a servo the 'bomb' is a hydraulic servo and not a vacuum servo as on most cars.

Turbo cars can have a vacuum servo. The Metro turbo had one.

No, the bomb allows the servo to maintain constant pressure. The servo is the device that sits between the brake master cylinder and your brake pedal, it is bolted to the bulkhead.

And the most effect thing you can do to standard brakes is...

To replace discs and pads, new fluid and braided stainless steel lines.

Failing that skip them and go Monoblock

G2000 is the hydraulic fluid which is used in the power steering and brake servo system. (Also used for the power roof on cabrios) As has been pointed out there is no room for a traditional vacuum servo on the S2 so a hydraulic version is used.

I have no reference to a G1000 fluid.

The actual brake system uses common or garden brake fluid (DOT 4, etc) the same as every other VAG (or other) car. The designation for this is B700.

At the moment I am bidding for the RS2 brake calipers on german ebay. What disc does it require? And what pads? Originally I was planning to go on holydays to the sea but now its the RS brake.....

I didn't think there was a servo between the bulkhead and the master cylinder but you are right see picture.

I'd argue about the description of the bomb. I feel it is a pressure resovoir to actuate the servo. As you know Inside the bomb is a Nitrogen filled bladder which pushes against the pressurised Hydraulic fluid. This will expel the fluid as required. The reason the bombs fail is they lose the nitrogen pressure. I had a Citroen and this had these cylinders as shock absorbers!

The French and the Germans are very close, that's evident in the EU!

My engine bay looks quite good in that photo!

I was wandering round with a digital camera at midnight to take that photo!

Heaven knows what the neighbours think!

The hydraulic pressure accumulator holds pressure in the system for emergency assist if the hydraulic pump fails or the engine quits altogether. It's a nitrogen vessel that holds several thousand PSI. It is believed that over time the nitrogen leaks out of the system (diffused through the diaphragm), because almost all accumulators start to go bad after about seven years of service.

Not several thousand but 70-75bar = 1015-1090 psi.

Nice thing in Audi bombs is that they are refillable. Only needs a bit work. I have a refilled bomb in my car. Cost me 20e

Other nice thing is that the diaphragm does not break when pressure is too low in Audi bombs as in Citroen units.

There is a company in Manchester called Westroen

They refill citroen Balls, I'm sure they could look at the Audi Units.
