    Hydraulic system question...

I've never had great brake pedal feel in the car and I'm trying to narrow down the culprits. A couple of years ago I was getting the red brake warning light coming on at start up and staying on for about a minute or so. Replacing the bomb cured that but didn't cure the hard pedal feel (feels like there's no power assist). Steering is not stiff and there's plenty of hydraulic assist there, but if I brake hard and suddenly, I'll get the brake warning light for a split second. Does this tell you anything? Fluid levels are good and aside from a very slight weep from the x-plug area, the pump and all hoses and fittings look dry and there are no drips on the ground. Having said that, I still suspect the pump is the problem, but what about the brake servo? Is it common for them to go?

It's got (and always has had) the green G002000 hydraulic mineral oil in it, about two years old now.

        Thats a good start...

AFAIK - the pump on our cars has two outlets - hence its name 'tandem pump' - there is something like 140bar pressure on the line to the steering rack, but I don't know how much pressure is supposed to be delivered to the servo.

Changing / reconditioning the pump is less hassle than the servo so I'd go for that - see if you can find a shop that can measure the hydraulic pressure - expensive gauge required.

This sounds to be very similar to the problems i have in this thread http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthr...t=39603&page=2

archiboy, hope it is ok I ask a few questions in your thread.
Does anyone know if brake assistance will be less if the pump delivers less than 140 bars pressure? Lets say the pump is worn and only gives 100-110 bars, will this affect assistance or is there a margin where you can go way down before it starts giving problems. I also have normal power steering but the pedal feel is quite hard and I expect more brake efficiency.
Is there any documentation amongst the forum users about how the servo works?

Can you feel a pulsing sensation through the pedal, kinda like ABS?

Servo isn't that bad a job to change, just a bit time consuming as you need the move a lot of stuff to get access
