    Brake / ABS noise

Over the past weel or so my car has started making a strange noise when stopping. When I'm braking to a stop, the second before I do stop it sounds like the ABS pump is starting, it's only a brief burst but there is no pulse through the pedal. Only happens just before stopping and does not seem to affect braking performance.
Anybody else had this or know what's causing it?

Maybe one of the abs sensors is a bit out of place
Had this with mine to last week, 1 abs sensor had come out a bit, pushed it back in and problem was gone.

Ooer Andy you might have a rusty ring!
Seriously though as mentioned you may have an incorrect air gap on a sensor or one of your abs rings may be full of crap which the system reads as a wheel turning at the wrong speed, hence the abs being activated.

Mine was doing the exact same thing a few weeks back. Cleaning the sensors fixed the problem as the others mentioned.

If one of the sensors is so far from the ring that you get no signal, then you can see it (or rather can't see it) on a voltmeter (I've no idea what setting) if you spin the wheel and test across the sensor when unplugged. Unfortunately if there is crap in a ring it may be difficult to work out which one it is as it may show a signal an you'll not be able to tell if its a bad one or not. There's got to be someone one here that knows the way to do it surely? Ben? Rob? Tonks? Paul?

                  .

Best setting will be AC volts, probably quite low <5?

Have a look at 2, the one with the lowest reading is probably the duff one. May also be a cracked ring...but doesn't sound like symptoms i've heard.

You need to set your meter to ohms and test the resistance across the two wires, easiest at the connection under the bonnet/seat check all four one will be different.

They are black and easy to see, look under the bonnet on the passenger side wing and look for a thick black wire that goes thru the bulkhead with a plug around the area of the header tank, they all look the same.

As Pete said, on the drivers side it's under the airbox, on the passenger side it's under the header bottle, both rears are under the rear seat.
Didn't really help in my case as I got the same resistance across all 4 Looks like I'm going to have to strip the hubs to get to the pick up rings.

out of interest Andy what kind of resistance did you get? Need to test mine soon, I've got an ABS fault too.
Also forgot to thank you for sending the DTI plate - cheers mate

Cheers, i'll have a look tomorrow. Out of curiosity does it throw the ABS light in all cases? As mine doesnt light up?
