    Hyraulic Fluid

My car has been sitting for about 10 days and when I drove it this morning the red hydraulic level warning came on and then went back off again.
Did it a couple of times as I drove over bumps etc.

System needs a top up...which fluid is the best to use?
Its a completely standard ABY Avant, no mods and serviced by Audi and AMD. There's a local Audi dealer just down the road from me so I can get some Audi fluid, just don't know which one as with all due respect for Audi they do not always get it right.

Looked on S2 Central but no joy.

    Thanks

Maybe you missed the section in S2 Central on this - buried under running gear I think. Info is there - lots on brake bomb stuff.

You want G002000 for the hydraulic system and DOT4 fluid for the brakes.

You might have a dying brake-bomb if the fluid levels are OK.

      Completely missed that section....not thinking.

Bomb should be ok as its only about a year old...new Audi part too.

I'll go and get some fluid for it all.

      Thanks.

Just like "how long should a set of brake pads last?". I believe there to be too many variables to give you an answer. My bomb thing has been making the odd beep on the multifunction display for the last 2 years (last 40k miles)especially when cold, parked on hill or driven over bumps. I suspect mine may be a sensor issue. Go to Paul's excellent S2Central site for straightforward info on how to test the integrity of the bomb if you haven't already done so.

It means that there are several factors that can cause the warning signal when you start the car. If you are sure it is not the fluid level or a faulty level sensor, then it is probably a bad bomb.

I'd always do a complete flush of the hyrdaulic system before changing the 'bomb'. It's an expensive item on the S2. I've found that new fluid usually gives the system a new lease of life for at least a few months.

I recently changed mine. Bought a good used for 800 SEK = £60. It is a relief not to have to get all that damned blinking and bleeping.

Sorry, I was a little drunk when I wrote that terrible sentence

What bomb are you talking about????

On my car, when you turn all the steeringwheel to left, nothing occurs. But when you turn all to right, at the end, the on-bord computer shows the brake fluid level alert!

What the brake fluid have with the hydraulic steering system????

                      It can be that bomb???

To me, it appears an electrical problem.
                      What do you think????

                      Thanks a lot,

The "bomb" is a nickname for the "hydraulic pressure accumulator". It looks like an old fashioned bomb.

When I was having problems with my bomb, I would have strange behaviour when the steering wheel was full left or full right. It used to disappear by keeping the wheel fully turned and driving the car for a few seconds. I never learned the reason, it just worked.

From my limited knowledge of this subject I recall that there is a link between the bomb and the PAS system.

Is it that the PAS pump pressurises the bomb? I'm sure Paul N can confirm.

I also seemto recall the bomb pressure was used for hte brakes as well as the PAS should the engine fail to maintain the hydraulic system.....ie die whilst you're at speed (!) in the right hand lane of a busy motorway.

Its always good to be able to steer and brake from that situation....

The hydraulic pump pressurises the bomb and powers the PAS. Mine always beeps when I first set off. Goes away if you turn the steering lock to lock or rev it above 3000rpm.

It's another thing on the to-do list

Mine beeps after being stood for a couple of hours or so. The bomb was replaced about 2 years ago, but the problem with mine is the servo part. It leaks past the seals internally, not a problem when on the road or engine running. I have a good SH one in stock, but cant be arsed to fit it. Will do it BEFORE the engine goes back in!
