996 rear calipers
I can't quite make out whether in Rocco's pictures there are two calipers being the 996 doing the stopping and the RS4 or S4 (whatever it is) acting as the handbrake. On other threads i have posted some options and thoughts to date but have not really had the time time to fully write it up but i was thinking of something like the set up as per the attached pictures (when i did the full Koni H&R upgrade in freezing February
).
The difficulty as has ben pointed out many times is not the 996s or the hydraulics or the brake balance but the bl**dy handbrake, especially on the coupe with its side pull cable. The pictures here show a Brembo handbrake caliper that is used on other vehicles like Aston Martins and the Q7. It has a neat pulley wheel to change the direction of pull to sideways. The idea came from Gardner Douglas who build GT40s and they use this AP Racing (owned by Brembo) caliper.
The key to this lies in how to attach the handbrake caliper and then how to get the cable there. My thoughts to date include enlarging the M6 threads in the hub assembly to M8 which were previously used for the splash shield. I did this when the struts were off for the upgrade. These 2 holes can then be used to make up an adapter, probably linking to the 996 caliper bolts for bracing.
As for the handbrake cable, well i'm sure Paul has mentioned in a post somewhere that the Avant cable is slightly longer than that of the Coupe but still has the same end fixings. I know that the cable has reinforcing / shielding on it and this will be in a different place but is is a start.
Any help gratefully received!2001 996 C4 - Being renovated

But why go so big on the rear, it will cost you a lot more to look after them and you wont use them to there full potential, I have 360mmx34mm with VERY big Brembo 4 pots form an Aston martin up front and im only going to run 335mm discs at the rear with s4 calipers as the balance would be close normal but greatly improved......Probably the longet S2 project in history EVER!

I can only speak for myself. But honestly, for me it's all about the looks.
Because let's face it here. My car is more in the garage then on the road or track so I could never validate hanging all that weight on my axles and those 380mm pancakes up front. But I just love the look of ginormous brakes behind the rims!
But that's just me.

Rear Brake calipers
I built in the moment a rear setup withe the complete R8 discs and calipers.
The discs are 356x32mm.
The caliper setup is one 4 Piston caliper and a seperate handbrake caliper.
This is mounted on a adapter plate that i have constructed and machined cnc.
The adapter plate ist constructed to use it on many Audi rear axles.
The Photos show the adapter plate for the two calipers.Comment

Nice one! Price for a set? Pictures of it mounted on a car? What material is it made of?

Rear Brake calipers
I have made the adapters from an high strength Steel 40CrMnMoS8-6.
The price for a set is still open. I need only add up everything yet.
The next days i take some pictures from a mounted adapter on a S2 coupe.
For the rear axle of the Sedan and Avant, it is already assembled.
In addition to the adapters you have to edit a little thing in the wheel bearing housing.
You also have to block yet another hub for this setup.Last edited by Ruhmic; 12 March 2011, 16:45.Comment

I have done a bit more thinking now and started to wonder if it is possible to start a list of various hubs.
Things that would be nice to know is the lenght from where the hub meets the cv joint to the surface where the brake disc sits.
Also the spline count and what size of bearing its using.
Or does this list already exist somewhere?
Edit:
From: Audi s2 front, lenght: 72mm, spline: 38, bearing: 82mmComment

Rear Brake calipers
Here some pictures from the mounted adapters.
The first pictures are from the S2 coupe and the other pictures from the S2 Sedan and Avant axle.
The next days I will bring it on the car and then I shot some more Pictures when the axles completely mounted.Last edited by Ruhmic; 12 March 2011, 17:57.Comment

Rear Brake calipers
The adapters can also be prepared for the RS2
You can use a wheel bearing housing from the S2.
The hub from the RS2 can mounted into the S2 wheel bearing housing.
The difference then lies on the disc and the caliper for the 5x130 wheel hub.Comment

Just made up some new rear brakes on my car as well
I used:
310*22mm discs from a8 4,2tdi q
rs4 b5 rear brake carriers
alloy calipers from 2000 audi 4,2 v8
brake hoses from c6 a6
Almost bolt on except you have to grind off some steel on the carriers to make it work perfectly. In addition to this you need to open the hole for the handbrake wire.
Because of the offset on my rims I needed to grind 5mm of the front of the caliper to make room for the bolts on the rims
Not a very cheap upgrade, It costs well over 1000euro but works perfectly together with my cayenne front brakes.Comment
